Physical description
An all-female humanoid race with a thick tail as their primary distinguishing feature. At the end of their powerful legs are clawed feet. Their skin color is normally blue or teal, sometimes with shades of green. They have a pair of horns, but they vary in size and shape. A protective plate covers their forehead. However, because of their breeding methods, the shape of these plates and the horns can vary.
Origin and general description
Born into war, the bisala were bred as warriors. With the looming threat of the aapada horde invading the continent, the genasi were forced to get creative. While the aapada warred with the dragons, many demihuman races were crossbred. The genasi sorcerers helped things along, speeding up birth rates and shaping their evolution.
Over the generations, they became stronger, faster, and more resilient. They developed an immunity to death curses, something that was a favorite of aapada at the time. Those who survived the battlefield bred strong warriors and over time, they developed a warrior mentality. They became the perfect soldiers for this unending war... until it ended.
The progenitor of the aapada was finally slain, along with the aapada generals and the first few generations. With the strongest among them dead and their ability to reproduce hampered, the remaining aapada were forced to scatter, many fleeing the continent.
With the loss of their genasi creators and left without an opponent, the bisala were thrown into disarray. Many of them turned on each other, splitting into factions or just random battles over the slightest thing as an outlet for their aggression. Plenty of bisala did not wish to fight their sisters and left the land of their birth. There were those who chose to hunt the remaining aapada, following them off the continent. Others simply chose to hunt strong monsters. Over time, the conflict died down. Several bisala emerged to unite their people into different tribes, both wars having scattered them across the continent.
To channel their aggression, the bisala often engage in hunts, normally targeting strong animals or monsters. Other times, they will fight warriors of other races. Many bisala have gotten work as mercenaries or adventurers. They retain their warrior pride and won't fight someone they perceive as weak outside of self defense. Often they will ignore races such as goblins until they choose to attack them.
Their selective breeding has gifted them a number of traits. They are quick on their feet and their naturally strong skin is highly resistant to arrows. As a result, they prefer to wear minimal armor, favoring maneuverability, with some even fighting in the nude. Still, they will often carry a shield to fend off melee attacks. They also are capable of transforming their forearms into werewolf claws, trading off some dexterity for raw power. Some can even sprout lizard scales across their body, making them even more resilient at the cost of their agility. However, this last ability did not become widespread before the breeding program was ended. Nor did a few others.
Compared to a human, a bisala is quite powerful, as they have inherited many valuable traits from their various demihuman ancestors. However, they largely don't specialize in anything beyond their immunity to death curses. While physically strong, they can't match an ogre or troll in raw power. While quick on their feet, they can't outpace a centaur. They can't endure the same level of heat as a magmaoid or red demon, nor can they take on the frozen tundra that the ice oni and yeti call home, and their healing factor is too slow to aid them in the heat of battle. Somewhere along the way, they developed a poor affinity for magic, making bisala witches rare.
Even so, they are valuable warriors. While they retain a sense of self-preservation, should they die they would prefer an honorable death on the battlefield. They largely fight without fear or rage and their battle lines are harder to break than most any other races.
During the war, they would often tattoo themselves after vanquishing a powerful foe. Some symbols showed how powerful an aapada they had slain, while others denoted rank. There were those who got a new mark for each kill. However, now they wait until they come of age and perform a hunt of some large and powerful beast. Only then may they have their faces tattooed.
I recently started reading Delve by and I was inspired by the valryn's origin story. After asking, I borrowed much of their background and added some of my own. I had a bit of fun with it.
Both the bisala and aapada are my original species. While developing the bisala, I invented the aapada as a reason for the bisala to be created. I enjoyed developing them a bit as well, but at this time, I'm not ready to post a bio on them. I'm also not sure that one will have a picture. Still, the two races may pop up from time to time in my stories.
While the bisala are a warrior race, they are not a monolith and not all of them walk the path of a warrior.
