Description As part of my university's 3D class projects, each students were required to model and render an entire 3D chess set. This is my own result.

Each of the chess pieces, including the chessboard, were modeled separately in Wings 3D. The models were then imported into Blender, where I added the shadow and mirror effects just for the heck of it. (Not really necessary for final submission, but I added them anyway because the models look pretty that way. )

By the way, the version you're seeing was rendered specifically for uploading on deviantART. I've even rendered a bigger version of this picture for printing and final submission. It's twice as big, and took almost half an hour to render.

Strangely, I'd never heard of Wings3D until now. ;; Why did you choose to use it over modeling in Blender itself? Is it easier to work with? Perhaps I should give it a looking into...

You know, I really ought to go to an art university, myself. >_> What year student are you?

A little explanation. I used Wings 3D because our 3D-modeling lecturer specifically teaches us students using that program for much of the modeling. It's easier to use, so he said.

Truth is, we're not limited to just Blender; students are allowed to use any 3D programs they have, like Maya, Lightwave and 3DSMax, whichever programs available necessary to render the final chess scene complete with detailed lighting effects and such.

Believe it or not, still year-1 student. Though, it's really because this is the 2nd degree course I'm taking. (When I took my 1st degree, such a course I wanted to take did not exist yet on that time.) I already have prior 3D-modeling experience before that, mostly out of self-practice.

Well, if he says it's easier, then I'll believe him and give the program a shot. Even though I've been modeling for nearly a couple of years, I'm still really amateurish and don't know a whole lot. ;;

Even if you are a year-1 student, perhaps you're just a naturally talented guy. I hope you'll talk to me on instant messenger again sometime, because I really wanted someone to talk to about 3D modeling and game development stuff. Not many of my other friends can relate.

Well, the position of the chess pieces are supposed to be random.

Technically, it's not a checkmate yet because the black king has one empty black square to escape to, if you look carefully (between the black pawn and the black knight in front of him).

Pfff. My modelling friend once had a model that took a day and a half to render.

That must've been a very complex 3D scene indeed.

It was around 20000 reflective polygons inside a reflective sphere.

Depends on whether or not you can foresee the future events.

I've lost interest with chess for sometime now... In fact, I seldom win in chess.

Heh, cool!
And it looks like it's nearly checkmate for the blacks?

MarwanGreenCritter In reply to DCLeadboot [2011-03-11 14:38:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, the position of the chess pieces are supposed to be random. But yeah, now that I've noticed it, the black king is indeed one move away from getting checkmated.

The captured black bishop have foreseen the future, and had fallen flat to the ground in despair.

DCLeadboot In reply to MarwanGreenCritter [2011-03-11 14:46:01 +0000 UTC]

Well, as far as I can see, the black king might still have one safe-square left... but the trap is already well primed...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MarwanGreenCritter In reply to DCLeadboot [2011-03-11 14:56:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, actually, it's not a checkmate just yet, because the king does indeed have a safe square to go to. Thus, the game of chess still has a long way to finish.
