Description [::: Defiance - Oni Concept Sketch [OLC] :::]

BLARGH. I'd say quite happy with this; i say that cos i feel i'm gradually getting closer to expressing the image in my head of what i'm aiming for in OLC onto paper. So i guess thats progress? And progress is good!

I actually tried a few new things with this ... and ... hopefully i can apply those things in the future, hehehe. Although ... it did take longer than usual, but, maybe thats a as a result. Meh whatever. I'll keep my thoughts to myself. Hrm! Uhm, all comments welcome and appreciated, thanks yo!

This. Is. Gooooooooood!

I believe his chin is intended to be sharp and long like that (projected, maybe?), but I think the ear is tilted a bit backwards and is situated a little above its normal place. Very tiny and unnoticable.

Thant's all.

And just when I thought you were great with a pen...you do a complex piece like this in pencil. And its so clean too. Everything is great. (please also note that I just realized that most of work is pencil so great jov on keeping those clean too) The hair, the hands, the expression. Very nice work.

I like the composition a lot in this one. The picture plane is well used, the rainy lines give a strong sense of movement and visual direction and linkage between the sword and the face, and the fact that he's facing left is important. For an english reading audience, who read from left to right, having a character facing left is an indication of him facing the past, what has been, and so it looks like he's been running from something and has now turned around to face it. Awesome awesome awesome. I think the sword looks like it's supposed to be metal because of the line down the middle, but otherwise it seems pretty wood-like.

haw haw! haha, normally things like that, no one really indulges in conversation with ... but its definately right. I mean, i flipped the image over, to see if itd work mirrored ... and it doesnt, at all. it DEFINATELY has to be the way that it is, you know.

cool, and glad you liked im really happy with this piccy It just ... has a lot of the stuff in that ive been aspiring to for a while now

mallaard In reply to martinhoulden [2004-12-06 01:53:56 +0000 UTC]

This is definitely a fine piece, and you have every right to be proud of it. I flip my images around constantly, either on computer or by shining light through the paper, to search for mistakes and see how the composition works the other way. I've read that a lot of manga artists get angry over American publishers flipping there work because it screws up storytelling composition and reveals drawing mistakes. Some, like the new Ghost in the Shell manga, have certain panels flipped back to normal after Viz or whoever flips the overall pages for english audiences.

martinhoulden In reply to mallaard [2004-12-06 01:59:50 +0000 UTC]

lol, yeah ... hiroakia samura (blade of the immortal) strictly asked for each panel to be cut and pasted. He has his reasons i guess, but i'd imagine theyre along those lines XD

ITs actually really annoying when something looks fine one way, then you flip it and its liek ... @_@ the worst thing ever. its crazy!

I remember reading about him. I think a large part is he doesn't want the swastika to flip around.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

martinhoulden In reply to mallaard [2004-12-06 02:19:19 +0000 UTC]

ahhh! well, it doesnt say that, but it makes sense ... yes ... cos ... if its flipped, doesnt it mean something else? or something?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mallaard In reply to martinhoulden [2004-12-06 02:22:21 +0000 UTC]

If I remember right, that dude has the Chinese, Indian, or whatever kind of swastika, and if it's flipped it becomes the Nazi version. I'm not sure, but I think that's it. The artist was also concerned about storytelling and the other stuff too.
