Did you add a lot to the pencils?

Yeah--quite a bit, really. Looking back, I'd say I added way too much. Shawn's stuff is pretty smooth and clean and I dirtied it up with a ton of unnecessary hatch lines.

I loved that about it, reminded me of a book I picked up from Dan Parent, the Archie guy.

the only way youre gonna get better at inking is through practice...i do think if i were you however, i wouldve made copies of the pages and inked those first before i actually tried to ink someone's actual pencils.

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't say I'm a great inker (especially since my father blessed all us Welser boys with shaky hands). I do well enough to get by on my own stuff, but my pencils are often VERY loose and scribbly and I do most of the figuring out during the inks. This is why I wanted to work over someone with tighter pencils.
Funny thing is--Shawntae had already inked 2 of these pages (I have one of them scanned in if anyone's interested in seeing how each of us handled the same page) so I had to lightbox them to make sure those pages matched the rest of the stuff I was doing. So I guess those 2 pages counted towards my practice before going over his real pencils. But honestly, there's no way I would have wanted to ink it twice. I like to keep things pretty loose when I ink and all that energy would just be sucked out if I'd already practiced it beforehand.
Still--I had a lot of fun playing around with someone else's stuff for a change. I'd like to try it again! This was all done with a nib and some brush (and a bit of pen for straight lines) and I've since switched over to brush completely, for the most part. There's no telling how these would look if I'd done them today but I certainly think I would stay away from the hatch marks so damn much and focus more on line-weight.

I give big ups to ANYONE who does even remotely good with a brush. Other than fill- ins, my hand is not steady enough to use one. I like the control i have with the nibs. It's not easy to use a nib, but once you get the hang of it, you never lose that skill.

I think they are greatly inked, Shawntae couldn't do it better

Thanks! I always felt his inks could use a bit more personality, but I think I took things a bit too far. If he ever lets me do something like this again, I'd tone things down a LOT more. I've completely buried his pencils. That's just not cool.
It's funny--I just asked him if he had anything I could ink, assuming he'd give me some sketches or something he didn't care about in case I screwed them up. Then he hands me the first 6 pages of this new storyline he was working on. Heh. Oops.

Well, Shawntae is trying this new without-inklines style in his new Extinctioners Origins comic and don't get me wrong I love his comics but I think the old style looked better. Thick inklines make the different colors come out better because it better seperates them from each other.

Yeah--I told him he shouldn't even waste his time inking them if the colors are just going to bury his lines like that. I think it looks kinda cool, though, and you can still tell it's him underneath all that rendering.
