History/Life:
Gloria Damrau is the eldest and only surviving child of Military Police officer, Alexei Damrau and baker, Emilia Damrau. Gloria was named after her Grandmother as she was a very kind and respected women around the townsfolk, helping out immensely during times of hunger. To the common folk her Grandmother was seen as a hero in her own way.
Although Gloria is close with her family, she’s closest with her father. Throughout her childhood he was her idol figure and best friend. Whenever he was home from working with the Military, he would take Gloria out and they would run to their favourite spot in Trost District, a small meadow surrounded by trees. This was their favourite spot because they couldn’t see the walls from where they were and would forget about the threat of the titans for the time being. Gloria would constantly beg Alexei to take her with him to work the next time he went and his answer would always be the same; when she grew up she could enlist in training and join the Military Police (leaving out the fact she’d have to rank in the top 10 so he wouldn’t destroy her spirit).
Gloria’s school life wasn’t anything special. She wasn’t the biggest fan of school and had average grades coming in, nothing special. She had her group of friends but was never really super close with them as she never really understood why strangers would become so close and share such great details of their lives with each other; she saw that as that’s what families were for. This caused her to be more of an introvert but this does later change.
Although it had never become a big part of her life, Gloria did dance as a youth which later translates into her exceptional agility while in the military - and ultimately her success with mastering 3DMG.
Gloria’s mother didn’t support the idea of her joining the military, believing it wasn’t a lady’s work and joining at the age of 12 was too young. However, Alexei managed to persuade her to let Gloria enroll.
A few weeks after Gloria’s eleventh birthday she and her mother received the devastating news that her father had died. The source of his death wasn’t listed causing Emilia to go crazy and make the MP tell her what had happened. Through thorough investigations and trusted inner MP sources, Emilia learned it was the MP who had killed Alexei. When confronted, they reasoned that Alexei was performing acts of treason by speaking of the outside world and him disrespecting the Monarch. They also informed her that he was taking part in acts of rebellion against the king making them doubt his loyalties to mankind. Emilia was outraged by the news and soon broken. Gloria, a girl who never truly felt hate or understood the concept, was filled with deep hatred towards the MP. She wanted to attack them suddenly, just a threatening impulse but she kept still and managed to keep her nerves under control.
The MP told the two females that even though Alexei’s actions were full of betrayal, the Damrau’s still had a loyal reputation from the many generations the family existed for (which was a few years after the walls had first been created). And although they weren’t an all-powerful family, not only was their sense of loyalty strong but the family had produced some of the military’s finest soldiers - any Damrau that had been enlisted graduated within any spot of the top 10. It was decided the military still had a use for Gloria and as a deal, Gloria would have to join the military but could not enroll in the MP, due to her father’s actions. It was obvious the MP was using Gloria as a pawn - but both females were too broken to resist.
A year later, Gloria joined the military with a broken spirit. Her overall performance wasn’t up to par with what other generations of her family had set. Though, she excelled in agility and her performance with the 3DMG. But her battle skills were less than desirable, thus causing her to graduate under the top 10. Though, throughout her experience in training, she met a boy - Elbert Schneider (NOT CANON CHARACTER). This boy was rather peculiar for her as he was very open, optimistic, and passionate. After a few conversations between the two, Elbert revealed he wanted to go beyond the walls with the Survey Corps, to see the outside world. Much like Eren and Armin, he didn’t believe in a life trapped behind walls. This absurd goal of his lured Gloria closer to him as she was very curious where his motives stemmed from, but a few months before training ended, he had gotten Gloria more and more passionate about going outside the walls. Not only that, but he also helped her open up in terms of personality - though she still remained fairly quiet out of habit.
Their two personalities intertwined together nicely and they soon found themselves in a blossoming relationship together. While Elbert graduated with a rank of 8, Gloria hadn’t even made it to the top 10 but that didn’t matter as they decided they’d enroll into the Survey Corps - both not having yet seen the true horrors of the titans. Their optimistic attitudes made them naive and when the Survey Corps commander had made his speech, by the end of it Gloria was shaking. When other soldiers were turning to leave and join the Garrison (or Military Police) instead, Gloria was tempted to walk with them but Elbert had held her hand, keeping her in place with his warm reassurance.
The two ended up joining the Survey Corps, training under them for a few months before heading out for their first expedition. At first it was a very exhilarating experience, but that only lasted until they encountered their first titan. The titan had been killed easily by members who had been on previous expeditions, however, that didn’t stop the sense of dread that had filled Gloria. Eventually, following a mass titan attack, Elbert had been brutally eaten in half along with many other unfortunate soldiers. Scarred, Gloria had made it back to the wall still in one piece and that was when she realized the true terror of the titans, and how she was truly trapped within the walls with the threat of the titans constantly surrounding her.
She was afraid, not having any time to mourn over Elbert quite yet. But as time progressed, she grew more and more claustrophobic of the walls but at the same time, a little more grateful for them due to the fact she was becoming more terrified of the titans. She was considering just dropping out of the military (despite the consequences of desertion) until having talked to someone (specifically Hange) about her fears. Hange’s notions to suddenly learn everything about the titans confused Gloria, but by the end of the conversation one thing was clear; Gloria wanted to get the hell out of the walls and continue the legacy she and Elbert had started. Her goals now in align with almost every other Survey Corp member, Gloria’s sense of teamwork began to improve dramatically. She displayed signs of leadership time and time again and was beginning to pave a promising path for herself ever since discovering her new goal.
Years later, during the 56th expedition beyond the walls, Gloria had a squad made up of 5 under her command. Her group had been one of the first to be attacked by a group of titans. They had been passing through a line of houses when they had spotted them and immediately chose to take care of them, which ended up being a grave mistake. In the span of only a minute, Gloria’s entire squad had died before her eyes. At first she had awful flashbacks to when she had first seen Elbert’s torn body, but the fear soon turned into anger. In spite, Gloria attempted mercilessly attacking the remaining titans, as well as oncoming ones and seemed to be almost successful, until her 3DMG wire had been abruptly pulled, sending Gloria flying into one of the nearby houses. The impact was brutal and should have killed her, but only ended up knocking Gloria unconscious while leaving severe injuries. Debris and wood ended up covering her body from the titans, leaving them confused as to where she went but ended up feasting on the rest of her squad, leaving a few limbs behind.
When she had later woken up, it was completely silent. The sun was still high in the sky, indicating not much time had passed since Gloria had passed out… or at least it shouldn’t have. When Gloria checked her wounds she saw the crusted blood was already beginning to fall off. When she climbed out of her “hiding spot” she immediately went to check on her dead squad mates, momentarily forgetting of the titans. When she saw their decaying limbs, she realized she had been out for days and that was when she realized how hungry and dehydrated she was. Not a moment later had the fear settled in. She was still alive, beyond the wall, and had been for days now, under direct threat of the titans.
After getting some rotten food and old water from nearby houses, which would be enough to carry her back to the walls, she tested her 3DMG to see if it would still be working, but it had been completely obliterated from her fall. Taking a couple blades with her, Gloria ran for the walls - however, she knew she wouldn’t be able to fight the titans, only hide from them due to her current state and situation. She had an advantage in terms of hiding because of her small form and experience in hiding from all the times she had played Hide N’ Seek with her father as a child. So that’s what she did - she hid from oncoming titans while simultaneously travelling back to Wall Rose.
In the end, it had taken just over two weeks to make it back, and the most aggravating part was that in her time beyond the walls, she was so consumed by trying not to die and to make it back to Wall Rose, she had not been able to learn anything but the habits of titans becoming inactive during the dark hours, which had already been discovered by then so it wouldn’t have been news to soldiers within the walls. Nevertheless, she managed to make it back, scarred, just two weeks before the 57th expedition. In the time she returned, she tried gaining back her strength and was soon caught up with the situation of Eren being a titan shifter, while also becoming acquainted with the new recruits.
While regaining her strength in time for the next expedition, she began serving in Hange’s squad as she had none other to return to and felt most compatible under Hange’s command. Gloria had also ended up gaining recognition for being able to survive two weeks beyond the walls and make it back alive and in one piece - with several recovering injuries. Gloria is still alive to date and working under Hange. (Status may change when the manga concludes.)
