Description Instead of ripping the covers off,
          Shaking it violently,
And forcing cold breakfast down its throat,

I wish they would carefully wake a sleeping poem
And ask it gentle questions
          Before its dreams are forgotten

Poor poem.
I know how it feels to be abruptly woken up >.>

Especially after I have the best dream ever or if a really good dream never got finished.

And btw your poems are really good. Even if you're not an avid reader

(Dr. Suess= best poetry teacher ever)

I'm not a big fan of poetry, but as someone who always valued pondering on my dreams and not being so abrupt to deal with the real world at 6am everyday, this poem incited some anger in me towards society.

Reminds me so much of my english teacher... A bit of analysis is good, but for goodness sake, don't bleed it to death! Sometimes, I think as you said, the meaning gets lost in there. Wonderful and accurate statement.

the thing i love about art in any form is that it makes an idea real, physical and makes it hard to forget, sorry i feel a little confused. are you saying people force poetry? people forget their poems and feelings? i like this poem but i don't know what the message is completely

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marian-ette In reply to jmjack156 [2012-10-03 03:59:14 +0000 UTC]

My thoughts: the MEANING of a poem shouldn't be overanalyzed or forced. Poetry is meant to be beautiful. Sometimes when we try to find THE meaning of a poem (aka. what the poet was intending), we end up destroying what we as individuals can take from it. Make sense?

Marian-ette In reply to jmjack156 [2012-10-03 13:58:00 +0000 UTC]

I don't think so! Analyzing a poem and ripping it limb from limb are two different things, I think. You were analyzing (and hey, the poet was actually accessible!). English professors tend to do the ripping. Like, if someone asked you to write a 15 page paper on this particular poem... yeah. That's just taking all the fun out of it (and frankly, there probably isn't 15 pages worth of meaning here unless you rip the thing to shreds, anyway).

This is such a short poem, but it conveys its ideas concisely and powerfully. I love the imagery and dazed atmosphere. The only criticism I have is to reverse the order in which you introduce 'a sleeping poem,' making the lines read ''Instead of ripping the covers off of a sleeping poem' and 'I wish they would carefully wake it.' That's just for clarity, but if you were intending a sort of element of surprise, that's fine, too. It really works either way- I just wasn't quite sure what I was reading the first time. Again, wonderful job. This is a fantastic piece.
