My mom is like that, taking forever to choose names, because you have to see the personality first.
Examples We've wound up with SOmetimes this works out, sometimes it doesn't. Examples We've wound up with
A parakeet named Fraidy-Cat (didn't live up to that after awhile. She became a real bully to the other keets and cocktiels)
A Quaker Parrot named ButtHead (lived up to it perfectly).
A Husky named Psycho (such a sweet heart now).

I know exactly what you mean. Naming a young or new pet by personality can be odd, they are still getting used to themselves and growing, so it doesn't always stick.
Like Psycho, he suffered from some puppy hyperactive issue and would go nuts tearing you up while playing. He grew out of it and is a real sweet heart. Now his name and his 'ripped' up (fly bitten) ears make people so scared of him while it's their other (very cute) dog that will tear a hole in you.

yes, almost all our animals have changed their habits and character when grown
and the name is often changed to better suit
