Description Here's a new bag idea I'm planning on using for Sakura Con. I can make these much faster then the leather bags, due to the ability to use my sewing machine. I'm planning on having it tested out to see how functional the actual design is, it looks rather neato, but I require someone elses oppinions to make it better.

I really need to work on straightening my sewing machine stitch. What is your secret? As in general. and do you ever make patterns for any of these things? I assume you do. I get carried away mostly and tend to use fingers and whatver looks good. I also have a habit of recycling old things like bags etc, as you will see when I post my latest costume. My first half decent one might I add.

aye, this outfit of yours sounds like quite the attire.

as for my secret... all I know is that it's experience. I'm going on 4 years of experience in just sewing alone. Another thing is, there's a small amount of things in the world I'd rather do then spend my day creating and crafting something. I also inherited alot of skill from my grandpa and my dad, who are both extremely crafty.

As for patterns, all my bags I make a pattern for. I haven't made many garment patterns, but I plan to be doing that alot more since I'm taking pattern making next term in school.

I like the seed shape, it does remind one of an acorn

I really like the one big space without dividers, but I agree a little pocket inside or hanging on the outside would definately be nice - to help combat the rule that whatever you're looking for will be located at the very bottom of the bag, heh. Although with a pointed bottom at least it might be a little easier to check since there would only be 1 corner so to speak.

a pocket on the inside of the lid might be nice - one that zips or snaps closed so nothing would fall out of course.

Being a lover of tassles I almost like the suggestion of something hanging off the bottom....but I think with this more functional style and fabric a tassle might look a little funny, or just get in the way.

For some reason, this strikes me as something my friend who has rabbits would carry one of them around in, heh, I can just see a little nose poking out where the gap in the zippers is

haha! yes

I cut out fabric last night to begin making 6 more... I expect I'll have those done by the end of the week and begin another batch.

I dig all the earthy colors and fabrics that you use

p.s. men who can sew are sexy it's the truth - my cousin and I were talking about that just yesterday.

interesting pumpkin bag you got there... how many a pound will it beable to carry?

Marcusstratus In reply to Aries-War86 [2008-02-22 18:33:26 +0000 UTC]

Oi! quite a few... I wouldn't go filling it full of lead, but there's actually alot of volume to this small bag... part of the illusion is created by the smaller opening.

alrighty! I was going to send the pattern, in case you guys wanted to try making something. But it is a very basic pattern, just two pieces. the sides and top.

Erm... let me know what I could change or keep, or if it's even a usable enough bag to sell at the Con. I'm ready to make more whenever...

Lastwear In reply to Marcusstratus [2008-02-24 01:19:29 +0000 UTC]

Its okay I thing its an easy pattern,
The only thing that we though of that might improve it in a small flap to go over the zipper when closed.

Marcusstratus In reply to Lastwear [2008-02-24 02:46:12 +0000 UTC]

now do you mean covering up that hole, or to go over the entire zipper?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lastwear In reply to Marcusstratus [2008-02-24 18:24:48 +0000 UTC]

Sorry I meant the space in the front were to two zippers meet. And not over the hole zipper just were the two zippers connect; so when you see it closed you see the teeth go around and the little flap but not the zipper toggles or were they connect. Hope this is a bit better explanation, if not I'll have Thom give an explanation.

Sorry my brain it kind of fried of late

larrysleather [2008-02-19 02:50:55 +0000 UTC]

I like it... very creative. Reading all the notes here, I was trying to think what a person could use the top for. I like the idea of pockets on the inside but sometimes a divider may get in the way if you stuff a lot of things in it. How about a small matching cell phone pocket or case on the side of the bag or on the strap near the chest? See, you have all of us thinking but the bottom line is..... we like it a lot.. thanks for sharing.

BlueWingedCoyote [2008-02-19 01:44:26 +0000 UTC]

I like the shape of it and the straps and agree that a cel pocket inside and a clip on a bit of strap inside for keys. If you are going to be making more I would also suggest doing different colored triangles to accent what goes into them. Or maybe patterned and plain. And for some reason I could see a tassle or a big bead or something coming off the point.

Marcusstratus In reply to BlueWingedCoyote [2008-02-19 06:42:53 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes! Alternating colours! That's a grande idea. I've actually got a button on the bottom of this, but I like the idea of having something poofy hanging from the bottom of it

VioletRosePetals [2008-02-19 01:15:03 +0000 UTC]

It has a really neat shape and I like the way it looks, but I have to agree with the masses, an inside pocket or two would come in handy and the the gap in the zippers should probably disappear. But an all around zipper like *Feybles said would probably do the trick. Also a D-ring would come in handy for keys and the like(although personally I would prefer to have it on the inside if I was to use it for my keys...I takes no chances <.<...>.>

Marcusstratus In reply to VioletRosePetals [2008-02-19 06:36:11 +0000 UTC]

Looks fab, though it could do with some sort of internal pocket. Just to protect that one thing you want keeping safe. Still it would be perfect for carrying the odd thing over to a friends or even for shopping.

Feybles [2008-02-18 23:28:01 +0000 UTC]

A smaller pocket on the inside, or maybe even the lid, or outside hanging on a strap or from a d-ring & clip on the bag would be handy. For one's small quickly-accessed things, ie: phone, wallet/$$ or keys. Pockets so you can find your stuff in a hurry are always grand. One big area for whatever ends up in there, and a smaller pocket or two so you don't have to rummage every time!

other than that though, it looks really good. I greatly appreciate zippers on bags, you can do whatever without losing your stuff! Maybe one zipper all round to avoid the gap happening?

Looks great, and hardwearing and comfortable. all the necessities really. Nice work!

I've got this 2 zipper thing going on due to lack of long zippers. I have them I just don't want to spend them on a proto. but thanks for the input!

From a purely functional standpoint, it could use some more dividers or pockets--I wouldn't be able to actually use it as is. Aesthetically, it's lovely.

Awesome! T'would be made better though, I think, if the zippers met in the middle intead of leaving a gap. Mayhaps also add a d-ring or something somewheres for clipping keys and such to?

Looks neat. What are the straps on top for? Are they elastic? Just decoration or for sliding in rolls of stuff?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marcusstratus In reply to notsomighty [2008-02-19 03:06:59 +0000 UTC]

They're designed just for aesthetics, and to keep the lid semi rigid. It's made of the same straps that the shoulder strap is. You could stick all sorts of stuff on them...
