Description Ghasts are a subterranean race of monsters that live in the Dreamlands. Lovecraft describes them as having disturbingly human-like faces, even without noses or other typical features. Added to that the description of them jumping around like huge carnivorous kangaroos, I got the mental image of nightmarish velociraptors with clown-like grins.

I see your vision is very similar to mine, maybe except for the smile and bigger arms. I went for the  T-rex tiny arms as the creatures in the story were said only to bite and kick a Gug they attacked, which would be weird tactics if they had useful arms too...

That is the mental image I got of them and in my mind it got mixed in together with Lovecraft's descriptions of various childhood nightmares, so in my head-canon I imagine ghasts as being also predators of dreaming children. I don't know if they are fully sentient, but I think it would be appropriate if they had the ability to mimic the voices of others. I get this idea for a sequence where a child is fooled by the creatures impersonating the parents' voices and by them appearing somewhat humanoid in poor lighting. I'm essentially picturing a Lovecraftian take on Little Nemo.

That is interesting but doubtful. If they were so smart to set traps like that and had easy meals in form of children they wouldn't attack dangerous Gugs. They are stupid, desperate or both to attempt that

As written by Lovecraft, yes. But I just like the general idea that I described, so I'm going to use it for some project of my own in the future.

That is one fucker of a mental image. It's just wrong for a raptor to be able to grin like that. Nice work.

Thanks! I imagine that with such a grin the ghast would behave and possibly speak like Freddy Krueger in the first "Nightmare on Elm Street", because they too seem like the type of monsters whose favourite prey would be children...

It does indeed look ghastly.
