It's not. It's just that league is too casual. DotA is the original and by far better than League (which is just Fischer-Price Dota) in my opinion

cant get shades to work with makers, so i gave up on shading color without pen or pencil

You need a lot of different colors of markers. You can blend by taking the base color over the shade or by using the colorless blender. It's pretty fun.
