Story
Previously: mapal.deviantart.com/art/Princ…

The day after the ominous phonecall, Aithne sat in the kitchen staring blankly at the table. She had no idea what she would do about her child being in the hands of a monster, but she certainly knew what she wanted to do. She wanted that man dead, more than anything in the world she just wanted him gone. The police had said they would try and track her insane ex-boyfriend down, and Aithne could only hope he was as stupid as he had ever been. She looked up with hollow eyes as there was a knock at the door. Lee was stood with a piece of paper in his hand, reading it as he entered the kitchen. “Hey,” he said quietly, handing her the paper. “A truck just came in, says he has a horse for us.” Aithne scanned the piece of paper and nodded slowly.
“Yeah, I best sort this one out,” she sighed as she stood up from the chair and moved numbly towards the door. Her joints ached and her head was fuzzy from lack of sleep, but she had work to do. She had bought this horse at a low price for a reason. Her previous owners had found her unmanageable, and had wanted a quick sale to just get rid of her. Aithne walked with Lee towards the guest stables where the truck was parked up. A man was stood against the truck waiting for them, and he offered his hand to Aithne as she approached. They shook hands and the woman looked up at the rocking truck. “How did she travel?” She asked as they moved around to the back.
“As expected,” the man sighed, moving to unbolt the back door. “She hates trailers more than she hates people.” Aithne was silent, but Lee could tell what was going through her head. It was the woman's firm belief that no horse hated people, it was just the human perception of fear and anxiety. The ramp lowered and all three peered into the shadows. Dust danced in the rays of light that came in through the small windows, and right at the back of the truck was a magnificent horse. She was a bit dusty and unkempt, but she was huge.
“How big is she?” Lee asked as Aithne headed slowly up the ramp.
“Seventeen one,” the man muttered in reply. “And she'll use that against you.” They watched as Aithne moved slowly and sideways towards the mare at the back. The large horse snorted nervously and pressed up against the back of the truck. Her ears were back against her neck, but Lee could just make out the curled shape of them. He had only glanced at the documents he had been given, but it looked as though the mare was a Ballovali, with a lot of Friesian influence.

It seemed like hours before Aithne finally reached the mare. The horse snorted and pawed the ground as the woman slowly reached out to unhook the lead rope. “You guys might wanna move,” she called softly as she slowly pulled the rope. The mare watched every move, almost waiting for her cue. Aithne smoothly pulled the rope loose and slipped it through the loop it was wrapped through. As she had predicted, the mare launched towards the ramp, only to find a lot more restraint that she had expected. To prevent injury, Aithne let her move forwards at a high paced walk, not restraining her enough to cause panic and a slip on the ramp. When they hit solid group, the large horse whinnied and tried to pull away, so Aithne let her grip go slightly and let her canter around in circles for a few minutes. “Easy... easy girl... shush now,” she muttered as the mare slowed to a trot, her legs snapping up in an elegant gait, and her head balanced delicately on her graceful neck. After a few minutes, she settled down enough for Aithne to move closer to her. She tried to bite and move away, but the woman was persistent. “Lee, why don't you take the gentleman in for a cup of tea while I take Joh here to her field,” Aithne said calmly as the mare snorted and pawed at the ground. Lee nodded and led the man towards the house. The man seemed glad to have the horse off his hands, only looking back once as he moved away with the vet. Aithne smiled after them before circling the mare once to stop her barging forwards and then walking towards the paddocks.

The sights and sounds were so fascinating to the huge Ballovali mare as they walked across the yard. Someone was training in one of the rings, a stallion with such fascinating markings and unique smell. She lifted her tail and whinnied to him, her harp-shaped ears perked right forwards. Aithne grinned and patted her shoulder gently. “Hey, there's a good girl,” she soothed as Joh went back to looking around. Her official show name was Jar of Hearts, but she was affectionately called Joh around the stables. Aithne liked that name, it somehow seemed to suit her. They passed a few other horses as they walked up past the stallion and mare barns, and Joh craned her neck and whickered to them as she passed. Aithne studied her behaviour as they went, rather fascinated by it all. The mare had such a thing against people, but when she was distracted she barely seemed to notice that she was being led along. Aithne had a suspicion that the mare had what she liked to call 'lead mare syndrome'. She had the temperament and the attitude to be a lead mare, and she did not like to be told what to do. It would take some work, but Aithne was sure she could fine a way to get around it all and create a first class dressage horse. Joh was, afterall, still very young, at just three years old. She had time to mature and learn, and fill her full potential.

As they reached the fields, Joh started to notice that she was being led again, and started trying to bite and barge the small woman. Aithne was firm with her, circling her now and then to delay their progress to the field and show the mare that impatience was not a good thing. By the time they reached the paddock that had been created for the new mare, Joh was thoroughly annoyed with this new owner. Aithne released her into the temporary paddock, and had to move quickly as the mare went to snap at her. “Oi!” She snapped, flicking the leap rope at the mare's rump to move her on. Joh snorted and trotted away with the most graceful trot. She had some of the movement of a Friesian, just the thing Aithne had been hoping for. The woman smiled as she hung the head collar on the fence and headed back towards the stables. She was glad she would have something to work on, but as she left the elegant mare behind, she thought more and more about her son. She sighed and ran a hand through her hair, pulling her phone out of her pocket. No messages. No missed calls. She really hoped the police were actually looking into it. Every day she was starting to lose faith, and every day brought her son closer and closer to a horrid fate.
