Description WORK-IN-PROGRESS

Five little monsters were riding through space
Their spaceship broke, and they fell into this place
They gotta get out but they don't know how
So they're waiting and waiting in a creepy creepy house

The whole human race is already pretty loony
But the ones who move in this house are gonna go boony
Monsters live on TV, never in the zoo
Hang around with us and you'll be a monster too

Lalala lalalala we like monster men
Lalala lalalala we like monster men

Poor old Stereo, he ain't sure just what he knows
Etno is intelligent, he's quite a super-head
Gorgious is a great big guy, but he's fat from too much pie
Bud is cool, of course it's true, but he's a TV fool

Lalala lalalala we like monster men
Lalala lalalala we like monster men

Candy is the sweetest one, cleans and cooks and acts like mom
All of them are going nuts, their spaceship's on the futz
The human race gets in their face, gotta drive the from this place
Of course they've got SMTV nightmares for the family

Lalala lalalala we like monster men
Lalala lalalala we like monster men

Gotta get a ride home baby
Gotta get a ride now
Gotta get a ride home baby
But they don't know how

Lalala lalalala we like monster men
Lalala lalalala we like monster men
-"Monster Men" by Iggy Pop (This is the full version, the version that's used as the theme for the show is just the first stanza and the "Lalala" chorus)

Before I was able to access satellite at home, I usually relied on Fox Kids on Saturday for my weekly TV cartoon fix when I was younger. Among the shows from that station I loved were Stickin' Around, Ned's Newt, Sam & Max: Freelance Police (although I saw that one after its initial airing), and two of my favorites from French studios Gaumont/ Xilam and animators Jean-Yves Raimbaud and Marc du Pontavice: Space Goofs and Oggy and the Cockroaches. I loved these shows with their bizarre art style, their zany sense of humor, their deranged animation, and their unique characters. I've been meaning to re-watch these shows for some time (moreso Space Goofs, since I've seen quite a bit of Oggy on Youtube) because these are very nostalgic to me, so while I'm out searching for new series or older series that interest me, it's nice to take a look back at some of these older shows that I used to love.

Anyways, for those of you who don't know what the show is about, it's about five aliens who crash land on Earth and take residence in the attic of a house for rent, in fear of being discovered, captured and experimented on. So they're out to find a way to escape the planet and return home while at the same time scaring or chasing off would-be tenants. One of the most common devices that was used on the show was the SMTV (SuperMega TransVolter), a machine that resembles a hair dryer chair that they used to disguise themselves in order to mingle with the natives.

(Left to Right) Bud, Gorgeous, Stereo, Etno, Candy

Bud- A lazy, naive couch potato and TV junkee (English VA: Jeff Bennett)
Gorgeous- A cantankerous loudmouth of a glutton and the big eater of the group (English VA: Danny Mann)
Stereo- A two-headed alien that constantly argues with itself while learning about the most useless information through books (English VA: Jeff Bennett)
Etno- An intelligent inventor and scientist who serves as the leader (English VA: Maurice LaMarche)
Candy- An effeminate neatfreak who is constantly cleaning and doing household chores (English VA: Charlie Adler)

From what I heard, the show ran for one season in 1997 but was brought back in 2006 for another season with new episodes. So far, the only two differences I noticed between the two seasons (I haven't seen the newer episodes just yet, but I did see a clip or two) were:
1. The animation increased in quality, being much more lively, fluid, and wacky.
2. Stereo was absent, due to several viewers and even Xilam studios describing him as a "very weak character".

The second season hasn't aired in the US, but was still released in English in parts of the world, so I hope to watch it on Youtube at some point soon. Also, I'm planning on doing a group shot involving Oggy and the Cockroaches as well.

And yes, I listened to the Iggy Pop theme while drawing this. (I friggin' love that song, it's incredibly catchy and nostalgic for me)

Great drawing! It's the same story for me, I didn't get cable until 2001, so I was raised on mostly non-cable cartoons, including what you listed, though I didn't get into Sam and Max until recently.

I remember this show...barely. I saw print ads for it in the children's magazine DISNEY ADVENTURES, and saw snippets of it on TV, when we had Teletoon for a while. As a kid, we only got Teletoon sporadically. We got it for several days, then it disappeared and the only way to get it was to subscribe to satellite or something. I also remember seeing a PC game for this at Staples years later...rated T for Teen!

You remember Disney Adventures? Cool! I used to subscribe to that magazine!

Yeah, Fox Kids managed to get several shows from Teletoon and YTV, like Ned's Newt and Stickin' Around, both from Nelvana.

I LOVED that magazine. Didn't subscribe, because all the grocery stores where I live used to carry them each month. I eventually stopped reading them just as soon as the magazine finished.

I still have my old issues with me, though I prefer the old ones from the 90's-early 00's. That's pure nostalgia for me.

The grocery stores in my area didn't have them.

Lucky you. I never really got to keep mine. Same goes for the Nickelodeon Magazines as well.

I never did read NICKELODEON MAGAZINE. That one was never in my grocery stores.

Too bad Stereo was considered weak. I would have improved him by simply giving him one head.

Hey, that is one nice style you got there! You drew them all just right! I'm looking forward for the finished work
And I totally agree. Monster Men by Iggy Pop is one of the epicest cartoon openings ever made.

Space Goofs is my favorite cartoon show ever, it's nice to meet another fellow fan!

Very cosmic!
I like the way you have drawn the whole group from Space Goofs, because I've loved the show since the 1st broadcast. Hopefully you will finish it soon. I can't wait to see the complete version of your drawing.
