Guess who got around to playing Pizza Tower?

While I haven't been a follower of this indie game's production, it did catch my attention from various sources, including a video by Alpha Beta Gamer showing an earlier version, and after it released on Steam to Overwhelmingly Positive reviews, I decided to give it a try. It took a little bit to get the hang of its fast-paced, often hectic style, but it wound up being a really fun game overall, with high marks for gameplay, graphics, humor, and music.

Pizza Tower obviously owes a lot of its gameplay style to the Wario Land games (which I freely admit I haven't played) along with the fast-paced speediness of Sonic The Hedgehog and the anything-goes nature of other comedic games like Earthworm Jim and Conker's Bad Fur Day, and the art style, animation and humorous tone is heavily influenced by the wacky cartoons of the 1990s, most of them obviously from Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, but I also got the vibe of some cartoons from France (like Xilam's Oggy and The Cockroaches) and Canada (watch Cordell Barker's The Cat Came Back from the National Film Board and tell me you don't see at least a little of that cartoon somehow in Pizza Tower). All around, though, it's a nostalgic throwback to cartoons and video games from the 90s and early 2000s, the era of my childhood, in the best possible way.

This was my first attempt at drawing some of the characters, and ultimately, I think it turned out pretty good. We have Peppino taking on Pizzaface, the lunatic out to destroy Peppino's pizzeria for whatever reason, while Gustavo and his giant rat Brick watch from the side. The "taunt" effect around Peppino wasn't added until the end, when I felt the piece needed a little something extra.
