Tattoos were applied in medieval/tribal times with bits of medal or even sharp bone and ink (which could be made from animal parts or berries, depending).
The ink was then pressed through the layers of the skin by the bone/metal...very painful!
*like how Angelina Jolie-Pitt had her tattoos done*
