i miss that time when we were at the same level, you used to call me Demitri-kun and i call you J-chan... and we both were like Vampires, always donate each other blood... now you leave me so far... you keep drawing while i stop and move on with real life... now you overwhelm me with your skills... traditional, digital, sculpt... you can do almost anything... i am proud of you, Jenny. Keep on moving... i always watching you from afar. - sincerely, your Demitri-kun.

This is great. I tried with Prismacolor and something like Gamsol. But it does not look as real as this. Is the paper important? And what is the difference between Polychromos an Prismacolor?Β

both paper and colored pencils quality matter, prismas are artist quality pencils, so except for the fact that they break a lot and have bad wood casings you have some quality pencils already, the other one i am not familiar with... paper is important for the look you want to create (also you rather want a thick heavy weight paper for cp's, so the paper can take some beating and wont buckle while drawing, i love using smooth bristol because you can get the finest details down with a minimum grain (because this paper has hardly any texture or so called tooth, the downside is that you cant layer nearly as much as you can with paper with more texture, other good cp papers are bristol vellum (strathmore) Stonehenge cotton paper, fabriano cotton paper, canson mi-teintes and pastel mat. the difference between prismas and polychromos is....well they differ from day and night, both in quality and use, prismas are wax based pencils which are softer and can cover an area quick, polychromos are oil based pencils and because of that they are harder (comparable with prismas verithins) and can be sharpened super sharp so you can draw the finest of details with them, also the polychromos are quality wise superior over the prisma premiers because their leads are super durable, in the 2 years i used polychromos i had none breaking it's lead and no splitting casings while sharpening them while the prismas need to be handeled with utmost care and must be sharpened in certain ways to try and avoid breaking their leads... i have prismacolors myself and i do like them but since i got the caran 'd ache luminance (which are also wax based but far more durable and the most lightfast pencils available) i don't use them so often anymore :/

it's great to see how you work on the picture.
I thought you would do the BG first and then the bird, but you work from left to right.
Awesome!

Yeah i like to work in small sections because then for a strange reason i never get to feel overwhelmed at the amount of work that needs to be done, if id do the whole thing at once i would become lost and end up abandoning the piece XD

Whoaaa... That's absolutely amazing! The details on the feathers and the leaves are just incredible. Great work on the background as well! Is it hard to make coloured pencils look so 'vague'?

mangakasan In reply to namu-the-orca [2014-11-06 18:40:07 +0000 UTC]

When you have artist quality pencils it should not be hard, there are many ways to blend/blur colored pencils, like using a paper stump or paint thinners (applied with a brush) or like i have on this one with colorless blending markers, also when you want something to look blurry don't press to hard, just apply the layers very lightly and blend them with each other :3

You know, for some reason I had never even heard of a paper stump, let alone realised its amazing potential for traditional pieces. That's definitely something to look into. Thanks a bunch for sharing your knowledge!
