Description Sorry for the spam but there were spelling mistakes (really dumb ones that bothered me to no end...) that needed to be fixed....so why the re-upload? Because DA was being buggy and wouldn't let me edit the upload as it thought the submission was a text file instead of an normal file -_- and it wouldn't change no matter how much i refreshed D8 So i had to delete the old one and resubmit the tutorial.....

I've drawn for eighteen years and know how animal anatomy works, but sculpting is a whole different challenge.
I've made/tried five sculptures so far, and I always get stuck and give up around the time when they look like something between the "start doing the head" and "detailing the head"-picture groups you have there.

there is no denying sculpting is hard and needs lots of practicing, my first sculptures were not to good, but with every piece you make you learn from it's mistakes, i suppose maybe you should try to finnish a piece up, even when it fails you can use that to improve a next project.

Sculpting just requires a lot of practice and patience

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mangakasan In reply to wolflover2580 [2013-03-20 06:52:11 +0000 UTC]

polymer clays (oven bake clay), usually a mix of super sculpey and sculpey firm

How did you made that eyes?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mangakasan In reply to vonBorowsky [2012-09-07 20:45:08 +0000 UTC]

i made them with clear resin + clear resin mixed with acrylics/other mediums in self made silicone molds (i cast in multiple layers, 1st transparent dome/lens, then pupil, iris and sometimes a 4th layer the eyewhite) sometimes when i want them done faster i just cast the dome/lens and paint the back of it after the resin is cured.

Lunewen In reply to mangakasan [2013-11-19 17:10:13 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for all the details, how did you create the silicone molds ?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mangakasan In reply to Lunewen [2013-11-19 21:11:29 +0000 UTC]

i used a two part silicone putty, when mixed in equal parts it stiffens up within minutes, so before it goes hard i quickly push some beads in of different sizes (i push them in half way) once the mold has hardened i take them out and you got yourself eye molds

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Lunewen In reply to mangakasan [2013-11-20 08:04:39 +0000 UTC]

Perfect !! Thank you hon โ™ฅ I thought to try with silicone for joints for the first try, I'll see if it's a good idea, it's not very expensive. I just need to find different size beads, now ^u^

Can't wait to see more sculptures from you !! I'm in love with your creations !ย

Oh my! I don't have idea of how to make 4 layers on something that small!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mangakasan In reply to vonBorowsky [2012-09-08 18:47:04 +0000 UTC]

a toothpick and a drop of resin eachtime XD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

vonBorowsky In reply to mangakasan [2012-09-08 19:12:23 +0000 UTC]

But what kind of resin are you using?
And thank you for answering

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mangakasan In reply to vonBorowsky [2012-09-08 20:06:53 +0000 UTC]

no problem :3 i use easy cast clear resin ( it's a 2 part epoxy resin)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

vonBorowsky In reply to mangakasan [2012-09-09 16:22:54 +0000 UTC]

Oh I have bought a little amount of this resin but I haven't tested yet! I haven't any molds.. maybe I will try to make something without using molds ><

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mangakasan In reply to vonBorowsky [2012-09-09 20:14:50 +0000 UTC]

i'm afraid you need molds as it is pure liquid and highly toxin (it's dreadfull when it gets to a curing stage and become pasty like..i once got a bit on my finger by accident and took me an hour to get it off (some skin peeling too) thats how nasty this stuff is...., you can buy mold making silicone (for eyes i suggest the non liquid press on form) at art shops or online shops and make sure you get a release medium aswell otherwise the resin wont come off where you casted it in

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

vonBorowsky In reply to mangakasan [2012-09-09 21:42:55 +0000 UTC]

I didn't knew it was so toxic
But maybe for vey very tiny little eyes can't I just drop with the sticks a small amount
over a clay eye to make a transparent layer over it? Like on these sculptures?
[link]
I also use gloves when I am working with these materials too.
The molds you are talking about are like these? [link]
Do you think they sell these molds to make eyes with like 5mm of diameter? If yes, do you know some online store that sells it? On my country is very difficult, or better, impossible to find this stuff for sale u.u

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mangakasan In reply to vonBorowsky [2012-09-10 05:59:25 +0000 UTC]

theres a safer and non toxic way to do your first suggestion if you want to make a droplet on clay then use 3D crystal lacquer (you can also use this to make things shiny or as a glaze, it even adds strength to a sculpture!) it's non toxic and you don't have to mix it and it's dead cheap (bought mine on ebay) well i made the molds myself as i couldn't find molds for doll eyes that small (i use sizes 3 mm and up) i use this to make my eye molds [link] it's very easy to use, just mix 2 equal amounts of both colors till its a solid color and push objects in (i used different sized beads/marbles to create my eye molds) and it hardens very fast within a couple of minutes, same here i buy most of my stuff on ebay or dutch online craft shops.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

vonBorowsky In reply to mangakasan [2012-09-10 13:51:49 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the problem is that I couldn't find a 3d laquer that is enought liquid to make little spheres, the ones I bought are too dense u.u And the 3d crystal laquer doesn't sells on Brazil.
Yes, the eyes for my dolls are very small too ><
I like this easy mold thing that you show me, but it also doesn't sells on my country and I would have to buy it on eBay outside my country. It is so difficult to be an artisan here u.u Well, I guess the only thing I can try yet and buy here is the epoxy resin =/

mangakasan In reply to vonBorowsky [2012-09-10 14:12:07 +0000 UTC]

i know what you mean my city/country hardly sells sculpt supplies either i'm fully depended on internet/ebay

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

vonBorowsky In reply to mangakasan [2012-09-10 15:11:15 +0000 UTC]

At least you can buy these things on your own country ><

mangakasan In reply to vonBorowsky [2012-09-10 15:33:20 +0000 UTC]

nah the silicone and clays i have to buy on ebay (most i buy comes from america XD

enigmaticworld In reply to mangakasan [2013-01-01 13:00:57 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for butting myself in here, but I'd very much like to ask you something too xD Like, when you buy from ebay, how to you get by with these ridiculous shipping prices? Or perhaps you have some seller that has them appropriately low? What I was able to find, ex. for castin' craft clear resin, is that shipping prices are almost as high as the resin itself :/

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mangakasan In reply to enigmaticworld [2013-01-01 15:51:15 +0000 UTC]

resin i buy from artshops in the netherlands as resin cant be shipped (or hardly) as it is very toxin and flammable, so i think yu have to look in local shops/internet shops for resin

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 0

vonBorowsky In reply to mangakasan [2012-09-10 15:46:35 +0000 UTC]

Oh my.. So we have the same problem!
Americans are happy, they got all the awesome materials really close to them, and even in stores (non online). I am so jealous u.u

It really helps to sculpt all the muscles, tendons, etc. right away I guess... I've seen a lot of people who just make the basic shape and try to sculpt all the surface details while sculpting underlying features and it doesn't always turn out so good. Can't wait to try this!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mangakasan In reply to SuperCJ [2012-09-01 19:15:01 +0000 UTC]

ah there are so many ways to do this, it's just whatever way fits you best, this worked best for me, you just have to play around and experiment and figure out which work pattern suits you best :3

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SuperCJ In reply to mangakasan [2012-09-02 00:29:47 +0000 UTC]

Any advice for smoothing the surface out (when it's not baked)?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mangakasan In reply to SuperCJ [2012-09-02 10:12:30 +0000 UTC]

i usually do it with a flat tool or with my fingers but you can use oils (vegetable oils and such) and smooth your services with a brush tipped with oil, i never do that because the clay becomes messy if you want to continue to work it so you first have to wait till it vaporizes, but there are many artists who use this medium and it works quite well

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SuperCJ In reply to mangakasan [2012-09-02 17:47:00 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I looked some stuff up, and it seems a lot of people like to use rubbing alcohol and then use a heat source to speed up the evaporation. Might try that out, and thanks!
