ARCANA CLAIM
[WHEEL OF FORTUNE, UPRIGHT]
Wandering far from home had always been more of a wistful yearning to see the world than a true career path, even if wandering had turned to somewhat settling down in Cantor town. When King Silvan's crusade against historical and arcane wisdoms flared, however, an understanding finally sparked in Elentiya. To remain still in the face of injustice, while appealing as an academic and not a fighter, could not be accepted. There could be no future without the preservation and safekeeping of history, no matter how dangerous. Enforced ignorance was no response for caution against the unknown.
And perhaps, in a more selfish capacity, while she had translated modern texts before for studious purposes, those tasked to her here were different. Utterly and entirely captivating, she began to trade a few more hours burning the midnight oil for the delicate work of extracting their secrets.
Filled for what might have truly been the first time with a calling towards her purpose, Elentiya from this point on turned her attentions towards history, peeling away layers of mystery found in unremembered languages, and pledged herself to the belief that a civilization is only as majestic as the history it retains.
Special Quest: To Winnow Words
With King Silvan's crackdown on undesirable knowledge after the Academy's rebellion, librarians all over the Kingdom have been moving in a hushed frenzy to safeguard their texts. They slip the most important and controversial ones away into secret vaults, or into the hands of trusted friends. For Cantor Abbey and its underground library, one of those friends is Elentiya.
On one visit she is surreptitiously passed a handful of books and scrolls, and implored to guard them from destruction. They are all texts that haven't been examined yet, as they are magically sealed and written in a mystery language. Knowing she had a hand in the discovery of the library, they tentatively ask one more thing of her - if she could, hidden from Silvan's notice, unseal and decipher them.
After the most recent Leywood expedition, there is new hope that the knowledge acquired on it could help reveal these texts. To aid her, they also provide an annotated list of people she may be able to call upon for assistance.Their locations are unclear and a few may be hard to find as they're connected with the Academy or East Miras, but it is a start should she choose to pursue this.
It was a short list, though considering what it was for, it was longer than she could have hoped. There were a few names Elentiya recognized from past travels, though most were completely new to her. The door to her room shut softly behind her as she slipped inside, gently laying her newfound charges on the bed. Their bindings seemed so delicate at a glance, and yet… hm.
She turned her focus back to the small slip of paper still in her hands. Lazaruz Calisto. Anastasia Umbrius. Luthais Wistari. Evin Lex Coreum. A few more names trailed those, but those four... they were the ones she’d have to seek out beyond Cantor. Carefully, she put the list to the side and pulled out a sheet of paper and ink. Her thoughts always did clear up more when written.
Strange-- her hand was trembling. She hesitated, the quill resting in her hand as ink dripped slowly onto the paper. Where had these nerves come from? This… worry? She’d already accepted the task. The texts were under her protection now, and all that meant.
No, not worry. Restlessness. Her heart had quickened when she took the books under her care, and now she realized it hadn’t slowed since then. She’d always faltered when she needed to act. So many things she could have done, and she held back. Her uncertainties had kept her from helping, from giving herself to what she believed. Not this time. This time, there would be no hesitation.
Elentiya brought the tip of the quill to meet the paper once again and set to work.
ahhhhHAHA! I haven't attempted a comic thing in so long, I'm so grateful I got to challenge myself for such a lovely prompt! I was considering writing more about the individual meetings, but I didn't want this to become longer than it's already going to be-- I might still, but not for the description of this lol.
In any case, here's a brief rundown of what's happening and with who!
- After getting the texts, Elentiya works with various people to get ahold of the names on her list. She first sends a letter to Evin, her best chance to unseal the magic holding the books and scrolls closed. They meet in the countryside and make a small camp, getting to work. Eager to learn more about being a sage, Elen also asks that he teach her some things, which he does- you can't learn everything from books. Since Elen couldn’t bring all the sealed materials without arousing suspicion, she goes back to Cantor, armed with the knowledge Evin gave her to continue unsealing the texts.
Elen next gets in contact with Lazaruz by near coincidence. She goes out as an emissary to the border of East Miras to meet him and bring him to Cantor- he has some business involving the city's shields. On the way, they arrange to meet again and work on going over the texts outside of the main city. When they meet again, Laz has come up with a disguise to divert suspicion. Laz, facial hair shaved and disguised as an old woman, is guided by Elen through town and into the woods where they piece together some of the unsealed scrolls (after having a good laugh about the disguise).
- More confident now, Elen sends a letter to Anastasia, an old friend from when she spent some time visiting the academy. Elen soon follows the letter, coming to Miras herself and arranging to meet with her to discuss the translations of the texts.
- The one person she'd been unable to figure out how to contact up to this point was Luthais. Luckily, Anastasia has connections to him- his sisters. She gets through to him, but they can't figure out a way to discuss translations without either endangering the texts or bringing Luthais to them. Luthais decides himself to do the latter, using the root systems of the thick trees around the border as his way out. He also uses his magic to disguise himself with plants to blend in better (and starts a few rumors about the wrath of Therras in the process)
- Together at last, the three of them set to work to get the translation of the texts. Through the whole of the journey, and especially as Elen works through the texts, a strange feeling rises up in her heart- a feeling she'll come to know as the spirit of rebellion.
And that's that! A long journey with many people helping and Elen's begun her path to the arcanists. So much happening! Ah! This description got,,,, out of hand, but I'm so happy with how this turned out (and I'm still buzzing with excitement over figuring out what the texts actually say lol)
