Description After hearing about Sonic Boom I found myself overcome by the inexplicable urge to dig, as I'm sure many other Sonic fans did as well. Through digging and finding quotes and the definitive truth behind this series I started to look for predictions. What might this show have in store for us? What kind of tropes and/or consistent subplots will we, as viewers, see? When searching for purely speculative predictions I found very few and the one I did find was based on very outdated information (when we only had the silhouettes to go on.) Now that we know a little more I would like to share my predictions and thoughts with you on the Cartoon and game. Feel free to comment with your own interpretations and opinions as well. I'm always open for discussion.

1. The Reset World

For those of you who are not aware of this; the cartoon has been confirmed to follow an episodic structure. Basically, this translates into a 'reset button' format. The world, as of the end of each episode is essentially 'reset' and will follow it's own short story through out. This means the episodes do not connect into one big picture. They're just a bunch of smaller doodles, so to speak, made purely to humour the eye.

As a girl who grew up with Sonic X and, in her childhood state, enjoyed it, I was worried. Though the anime often spoke down to it's audience, giving the feeling for myself now, as an older girl, of an immature show, it had a very intricate plot throughout. I feared that although my seven-year-old brother might enjoy the show that without a standard, ongoing theme I would been unable to find equal entertainment from it. I was luckily proven wrong, giving me hope for the future CN series.

A friend pointed out to me that many cartoons that are wildly popular with an older demographic such as the Simpsons, the new Looney Tunes Show and even the silly but still well trending Teen Titans Go! have this same format. They are made to be viewed episode to episode not as an entirety. They have no big picture plot and yet many people as teenagers and sometimes adults don't mind sitting down for a second to watch them, myself included. (Teehee, I'm a nerd. )

As long as the jokes aren't stale and far too childish I could see taking a liking to the show and, at the very least, giving it a chance.

2. Amy Rose

Discussing Knuckles in relation to Sonic Boom has become the norm. Amy Rose, however, seems to have made a far more interesting change. To quote a creative leader at Bog Red Button, "she's that strong sort of independent personality now." And it has been stated that this change in her was to increase the amount of female viewers and gamers. I, personally, think it is rather to appease the current female fans. As a high schooler, I know that Sonic is a popular series amongst teen girl gamers and anime fans, although it's a guilty pleasure. They all cry out for a prominent female character who reflects their views on what a sass filled teen should be. Sonic Boom's Amy Rose seems to be the answer to that call.

On the subject of her, it has also been made clear that Tails is not the only smarty pants of the group. No, Amy seems to be the bookworm as opposed to Tails' science skills. Amy is supposedly the guide for the team, leading them through a world she has studied extensively due to her interest in archeology...wait what? Did you hear me correctly? Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it has been confirmed that Amy is a female hedgehog Indiana Jones. I'm just kidding. I wouldn't take it that far but apparently she does have an admirable amount of history and field experience under her belt.

So far, this is shaping up to be a pretty impressive girl, don't you think? That is actually where my main concern lies. I'm all for the sassy female lead but I have a feeling Amy might be one of those copy-and-paste tropes. The independent female lead who has a secret crush on the male lead and hides a room full of pictures with him somewhere in her living quarters. It's been done so many times it's not even funny anymore. I'm all for keeping Amy strong and allowing her comedic yet sweet puppy love for Sonic to blossom but please, oh, please, I beg of the franchise runners, do not have this Amy meet the same fate as her predecessor. Sega made a similar mistake, letting the obsession overshadow her many good qualities as a leader, motherly figure and optimist, trading all those things in favour of an unhealthy dose of Sonic fangirl-ness. If this Amy turns out he same way I will not start a riot but I will darn well be very disappointed.

Finally, I predict an apocalypse on the horizon. Much like the shipping battles started by Sonic X, an anime that displayed faint but frequent hints that Sonic's interest surpassed that of a mere friend, I think Sonic Boom will do the same. Romantic subplots are a familiar trend in cartoons these days. Teen Titans Go! has three major couples, Beast Boy and Raven being the most prominent. Looney Tunes Show has Lola and Bugs, and Tina and Daffy. Jimmy Two Shoes, the show none of the kids in my town will ever stop talking about, even has Heloise and Jimmy. It can be argued whether Jimmy reciprocates her feelings but the potential for a couple is undeniably there. Based on that and the fact that the cartoon redesign of Amy was meant to draw in girls, who stereotypically like romance, I'm almost certain there will be sonamy hints here and their to keep the imagination of fluff-lovers occupied. Maybe they'll even pull a Sonic X and wait until the last episode for definitive proof of whether or not Sonic's interested. I am, by no means saying that Sonic and Amy will be a couple. However they probably will have their fluffy moments together. That's fine. As long as it doesn't overshadow Amy's character, Sonic's character or, more importantly, the show itself.

3. Sonic

Sonic is my third, final and biggest worry. The creative talent behind the cartoon have stated that they will be playing with the fast paced almost out of control feeling of a Sonic game and add it as our blue blurs defining personality trait. This raises red flags for me, personally. In Sonic's early days the character was defined by his heroism and inpatients. Later he was defined by his cockiness. Then we came to the 4kids era, what many would call the dark ages, where the deep tones in Jason Griffith's voice inspired a more secretly sensitive character type. I was cool with all of these...then Sonic became a prick. The interesting and loveable cast of the Sonic franchise were pushed to the corner leaving a now overly cocky, somewhat inconsiderate glory seeker in the place of the decent character bios we had known before. I couldn't stand it. Everything from his voice to his smile screamed brat to me. It only lasted a couple games, thankfully, but the remainder of that character still clings to the now more mellow hedgehog. His refusal to listen to Tails, even when he proves time and time again his worth and knowledge, his disregard for other cast members as mere plot devices, not even characters with their own history and arch. I have to admit, this is more of the Sega structure being reflected onto Sonic but it doesn't change the fact that it's their. It all began with the idea that Sonic should be rash, the same thing Big Red Button and OuiDo! are aiming for. Based on my own bias and irritation with more recent forms of the series I would hate to see this flush my favourite character down the toilet. However, I must admit, it is a twist worth deliberating on. If the developers and studios do this correctly Sonic's rashness could play out as being more comedic and endearing than plain annoying.

Alright, so, I'm sure you've had enough of me by now. Agree or disagree, these are my opinions. Like I said in the beginning, I would love to hear your take on things and, although I might sound picky and blunt, I am actually really looking forward to the show. Discuss and leave your own ideas in the comments. I hope you were entertained by my ranting. Have a happy, happy day!

1. The Reset episodes: that one just might be a good thing, not because people won't be lost in case they miss one episode (with the way everything is online now it takes laziness to not catch up anyway) but because it just might be easier to get decent plots if they are self-contained instead of trying to force everything to fit in somehow.

2. Amy Rose: you addressed a lot of my concerns and i have the exact same problems with the way they are writting Amy in the games now, i can't bring myself to critize too much Cindy Robinson since she has barely been given anything to work with (however i can't go against the Minnie Mouse comments either) and one of the things i like about Amy is that they managed to scape the hidden crush cliche by making her be the most shamelessly in love person ever, to me that shows confidense too and hopefully the new staff won't forget that.

3. Sonic: i'm not too worried about Sonic since his priorities say a lot about him and so far they seem to be in the right place, i think they are moving slowly in the right direction and as long as he's not a complete ass to the people who have been with him to hell and back, i can still enjoy his characterzation.

i made a wishlist of my own in case you wanna check it out: cari28ch3.deviantart.com/journ…

(i've been doing self promotion with no shame lately...   )

Yeah, I have to say, the reset episode thing is starting to grow on me. A lot of shows I like now a days are primarily resets. Another advantage of it is that if there's an episode the fans don't like it doesn't have to have any weight on the series.

Cindy Robinson's voice for Amy has always been a worry for me. Although, I recently checked out the behind the scenes footage and she seems to have improved...a lot. Not perfect but better. I also have to agree about Amy's "shamelessly in love" persona being a great quality of hers. Changing that would be a big iffy point for me. It could work but it would be harder to pull off. Besides, the crush is kind of her motivation, it has to be there in some way...hopefully.

Don't worry about the self promotion. I'll check out your wish list.

I know, luckily. Still a pinch too squeaky for my taste but tolerable.
