I did a lot of this as a kid and had great success coloring them in with watercolors.

I've thought about doing it with watercolors, but have yet to attempt it. I was wondering how well it'd work, thanks for sharing the info!

Maybe practice on something simpler. Use a small brush on a design you're not attached to. It works good because the cellulose in the wood is very similar to paper. It may yellow over time, though, from the oils in the wood. The upside is color that does not blot out or cover the burned lines.
