Here's a school assigment involving animal drawing. We have to create "realistic" hybrid animals.I went for a turtle/crocodile/iguana medley, which turned out cool at the end. Here is the concept sheet and some attitudes.
I suddenly remembered I love drawing animals, so I had lot of fun with this one

that top drawing is very well done
that i like most about this design is that it isn't like most hybrids of existing animals i've seen. each different animal is melded beautifully to make one new creature, instead of an obvious cut and sown together frankenstein that i see too often.

I actually enjoy merging different animals the most "realistic" way. The butchery-cut hybrids you describe are ugly as a matter of fact, as you said it, I agree. The secret to build cool hybrids is to find the right animals to merge (more about 5 or 6 than 2) and think of how their characterisitcs put together would have evolved since the prehistorical times, with all the conditions of their environment... It's actually a passionating job to achieve
