Description

What is a Makoatl?

A Makoatl is a terrestrial shark-dragon hybrid recently discovered

off the coast of the Greenland sea. They have the powerful tail

and jaws of a shark, with the body and (occasional) horns of a dragon.

They usually have manes, and are covered in thick coats of fur-

adapted to keeping out the cold in their native habitat.

They live on a diet of mainly meat and fish, and are known to be vicious

hunters! Despite this attitude toward their prey, however, they

are very protective and mothering to their offspring,

as well as to each other the majority of the time

First six people to respond may enter.

It's gotten dark a lot faster than you expected. You can't remember when you last saw your travelling group; you've been separated for a while now. You check your phone, wanting to (scream/cry) in a mixture of desperation and frustration. This was supposed to be the perfect end to a summer; a little hike with your friends, ending on the beach.

The sand is cold as your feet shuffle through it. The moon is big and imposing. For the longest while all you could hear was the waves on the shore; your own voice echoing back to you as you yell for your friends. But now? Now you hear something else.

A shuffle, the sound of paws against sand, heavy breathing and a low growl. You can now see the beast barreling towards you.

What do you do?

Hearing a shuffle behind me I turn to face the creature head on, no need to further excite it with a chase. Stone-faced I show no emotion of fear or anything of the like to give the creature any satisfaction of scaring me. I stand there firmly, waiting for its next move.

The makoatl increases its speed, galloping as only a bear-sized mako could. When it sees you're not going to budge, it slows itself to a stop just before you. It bears its teeth and barks; the noise more of a roar than a bark due to size. It paws at you, claws extended; trying to get a reaction from you.

Chromaticfang In reply to MakoStaffParty [2016-09-15 02:04:44 +0000 UTC]

Noting it's rather large size, it would be foolish not to have some sort of protection from the strange beast. Spotting a piece of driftwood nearby that washed up on the beach at some point, I grab it while keeping my focus on the mako in front of me. Resuming the still position from before I now hold the wood beside me, not threatening at all, in fact very calmly but obviously in the creature's sight as a force to be reckoned with just in case it decides to feel a bit more forceful with the claws.

Your confidence is admirable. It moves a bit closer, barking into your face. Its breath has an awful, putrid stench, and its saliva is thick and viscous; sticking to your skin. It jumps up, towering over you in the action. Its paws pound back into the sand as it comes down, shaking the ground below you. It desperately tries to get you to react.

Chromaticfang In reply to MakoStaffParty [2016-09-15 03:01:51 +0000 UTC]

Wiping its saliva from my face, I quietly chuckle. It seems to be a bit less vicious than before and maybe a bit more attention seeking? I grab the bag from my bag and started to rustle around in it, perhaps for something to hold its attention away from possible eating me. Assorted items fall out ranging from wrappers from previously eaten food to random papers before finally pulling out a flashlight. Flickering it a few times to make the creature notice, I point the beam of light down onto the ground before moving it around, trying to entice it to play and follow it.

BOYK1N In reply to Chromaticfang [2016-09-15 22:14:44 +0000 UTC]

The flashlight both scares and excites the mountain of a beast. As if a cat, it begins to chase it and pounce on it, attempting to catch the light. Who knew makoatls were so catlike? The makoatl becomes angry that it can't seem to catch it, and before long, loses interest all together. In the light, in your bag, and in you. It saunters off to find something that's less of a challenge.

The mako stops just short of you, drooling and snorting loudly. It sniffs you curiously, taking a slow step forward. It reaches its large head out closer, mouth open and teeth bared. Looks like it's not worried about you being a threat.

I stare at the beast in awe, taking a step back as it advances. I slowly return to my full height, which was nothing compared to the mako in front of me. Not knowing what else to do, I grab a decently sized branch and waved it a couple times in front of the mako’s snout before throwing it towards the ocean, maybe this beast wouldn't mind a game of fetch.

MakoStaffParty In reply to ceadar [2016-09-15 02:30:37 +0000 UTC]

The mako's short attention span works in your favour! It is completely entranced by the waving of the stick, bowing playfully. As you throw the stick, it follows with breakneck speed. It crushes the branch in its excitement, and rummages around for something to bring back. You think you've seen the last of the large beast as it disappears.

A few minutes later, however, you realise you're not so lucky. It drops something sizable near you-- something with an awful stench.

Oh. Looks like his last meal's remains.

The carcass looks up at you with glazed over eyes.

"Well what do I do know?" I ask myself, resisting the urge to vomit. It smelt horrible. I slip my small knife out of my pocket as subtly as I can to cut off a chunk of the carcas. I throw the junk of meat straight up into the air, taking a few steps back so I wasn't in the way.

The mako jumps up and grabs the food in its mouth, barking and chomping it down. Showing an inkling of intelligence, it grabs the carcass and throws it with a move of its large head. Your turn to fetch! It looks at you excitedly.

I cant help but to smile at the playful mako. Obediently heading towards the carcass, struggling to drag the thing back.  After depositing the animal at the feet of the beast, I cut another chunk out, trying to get the mako to eat from my hand.

The mako is absolutely tickled pink at you fetching as well. Its long tongue knits around the food and plucks it from your hand, pulling it back into its mouth. It barks, tail giving a wag. It saunters over to the water and grabs a fish, bringing it to you as if a peace offering.

Taking the fish from the mako, I just kinda held it. I didnt know what else to do..they seemed to at least tolerate me, but still, starting a fire didnt seem like the best idea. I wished now that I had started a fire earlier..a little bit of raw fish wouldnt hurt me right?
I sat down on the ground and patted the spot beside me, interested in whether or not the mako understood the gesture. I sliced the fish into smaller pieces and at tasted it.. it was a bit salty, but other that that it wasnt half bad.

The beast lunges, attempting to tackle you. It completely misses, obviously vision impaired or... something. It tumbles through the sand before jumping back up. It walks over, sniffing you curiously with its odd nose. It growls louder, snapping at your arm, attempting to take a bite out of you. Snack time!

I move out of the creature's reach, staring at their eyes. It almost looked liked it had no pupils.. But.. That can't be possible. When I moved out of the way, I saw its fins, glinting in the moonlight. A makoatl! I've seen these creatures before.. I thought with amazement. Reaching into my bag, I pull out a few of my snacks, particularly some jerky. "Want some big guy?" I whisper carefully, tossing some towards the creature. I certainly wasn't going to be their snack!

Its attention is grabbed by the timely offering of jerky. The mako's large tongue darts from its mouth and grabs the jerky, leaving behind ultra-sticky saliva to spatter onto you. It barks, pleased with the food. Sitting down, it barks again, looking for another snack to bide its time. You do look awfully delicious, though!

I gaze at the mako's tongue in surprise. Well that's.. New. I shuffle through my bag again, frowning slightly, then taking out the last bit of jerky and tossing it to them. "Huh.. Don't you makos usually like fish?" I turn towards the ocean and toss in some food crumbs from a nature bar to attract some fish towards the shore. "They taste better than me, trust me." All of my movements are careful, and precise. I know that the mako doesn't fully trust me, and it would be unwise to make sudden movements. Taking a bit of my shirt, I wipe off the saliva with a twisted face. That is.. quite gross.

Pulling out a small container that held yesterday's meal, I clean it out and fill it with water from my water bottle and carefully set it on the ground before backing away. "You like the ocean, but I'm sure you wouldn't mind some fresh water?" Again, my words are soft and gentle, as to not irritate them.

Its attention is completely stolen away by the fish that swarm at your crumbs. It sits on the water's edge, grabbing fish with its long tongue and gobbling them down. It seems to gorge itself, eating easily ten; no, twenty fish as they continue to fight over the crumbs. Pleased with its fill, the mako turns around and gladly takes your offering of water. It picks up the container with its teeth as gently as possible, but the backfires and soaks the mako's face instead.

It drops the empty container, snuffling the water from its nose and barking in confusion. It looks to you before leaning in and nuzzling your shoulder. It walks back over to the water and plucks a fish from it with its tongue, dropping it near you.

I watch as the mako eats and eats the fish with ease. I had quickly scribbled down some notes while they were eating then glanced up as they attempted to drink the water. Chuckling softly, I watch before mako nuzzles my shoulder and I hold my breath. As they walk away, I relax and set the container in the sand a bit better, making it look like a puddle, then fill it again with water. Turning back towards the mako, I notice they brought me a fish. "Is this.. for me? Since I'm certain you're full now.." I take the fish, smiling at the mako kindly, before cleaning it and setting it on some rocks. "Now.. I think you might be able to understand.. But don't be afraid. I'm going to build a small fire..
Grabbing some rocks, I make a small circle, putting some driftwood and twigs inside and pulling out a small lighter to make the fire.
While I wait for the fire to grow, I turn back towards the mako who seems to be friendly now. "I've got a minute.. Let me.." I hold my hand out, palm up, keeping a distance from them so they can approach me if they wish. You nuzzled me a second ago.. Maybe.. You'll let me pet you..? I think to myself.

The mako watches you curiously, barking as the lighter brings the fire to life. It jumps, large paws pounding into the sand; testing the fire's will. The fire, predictably, doesn't seem impressed or intimidated, and just burns on. The mako barks and whines, pawing at the fire. After a minute's struggle, it calms down, keeping a good distance from the flame.

Noticing your hand, it tilts its head. There's a gleam in its eye and it raises a paw, booping your hand with it.

I release a small sigh of relief as the mako doesn't put the fire out. Watching the mako carefully, I laugh as they pat my hand with their paw then I stumble slightly. You are absolutely adorable, even if fierce. I think to myself of the mako. Turning back toward the fire for a moment, I start cooking the fish as my meal. Satisfied with how everything is set up, I face the mako again and think of something to appease their playfulness. "I shouldn't go looking for my friends until daytime... Besides, I think you found me for a reason.. Nothing out there is more fearsome than you." I whisper to the mako as I think.
Beginning to smell my finished meal, I turn and place it in the lid from the same container I used to give the creature some water. Full, I had some left over and set the fish next to the mako, closer than before. "Here you go..."

I turn to look at the ocean, admiring the moonlight of of it. "So much for the perfect summer ending.."

The mako watches you cook curiously, intrigued by your human ways that are so awfully foreign. They don't understand much of what you're saying, but they do understand tone. They eat the rest of the cooked fish, pleased with your contribution to the meal.

Knowing you're in for a cold night, the mako curls around you; long wefts of hair warming in addition to their body heat. The beast falls asleep with ease, snoring softly. The picture of a small puppy in a body too big for it. You're not sure when exactly you doze off, but when you wake up, the mako is nowhere to be found. Instead, a small puppy sits in your lap, drooling all over you.

Looks like the big beast left a friend for you to take home with you!

Unsure of just what the barreling beast will do if it catches up, I start running as fast as my feet can carry me.  Small whimpers escape my mouth as my legs threaten to collapse under the duress of the chase.  'Maybe I should try to escape back down the trail... I might be able to shelter in a tall tree.' With that thought in mind, I try to get myself to the safety of dense brush and trees quickly.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MakoStaffParty In reply to BloodScyk [2016-09-15 01:42:46 +0000 UTC]

It lumbers after you, pawpads once softened by the sand now making loud booms against the solid ground. It wastes no time chasing you right up a tree, jumping up after you. Lucky for you, it has little tree-climbing skills and manages to slip right back down with each try. The bark is growing thinner and thinner as its large claws tear through it repeatedly. Looks like your tree won't be around for much longer.

BloodScyk In reply to MakoStaffParty [2016-09-15 01:57:18 +0000 UTC]

'What to do, what to do!' the blistering thought of being consumed by this beast raged as it torn the tree down bit by bit. Frantically, I try to pat myself down for something to distract it with.  My Bag! In the blind panic I had forgotten that there was a bag slung around me.  A quick rummage yielded a handful of trail mix that I had hoped to eat later on the way back.
"Have these you jerk!" I yell down at the creature as I fling the treats at it.

The mako lets out a borf of displeasure as the trailmix conks it in the head. It is quick to forget the offense, however, sniffing at the trailmix and devouring it like an anteater does ants. Pleased with the offering, it barks up to you, before sulking off into the night.

Looks like you get to live to tell the tale!

I freeze at the sight of it, my heart starting to pound from the rush of adrenaline. Fight or flight has kicked in but my body is having trouble deciding. A few seconds later, I finally decide to run towards the ocean, hoping that the creature cannot follow me into the water if I get deep enough.

Now I'm completely soaked. Great.

The big ball of fluff manages to lunge at you only to end up with a snout full of sand. It recovers slowly, snorting hard to get the sand out of its nose. You can't even begin to think how that must feel. As preoccupied as it seems, a few minutes later, it remembers its fleeing snack. Its large red eyes settle on you, bolting towards the water with reckless abandon. The shark tail and fin are painfully obvious now, illuminated by the moon. Maybe challenging a makoatl in water wasn't your smartest idea.

I almost laugh as I watch it stumble and fall, but that feeling is short lived.I whisper a few choice profanities to myself as I simply stand and watch as it keeps coming towards me, clearly not put off by the water. Maybe even loves it, considering what I can see now. Stupid.

I don't know what to do, clearly out of running away options. There's for sure nobody around for me to scream for help.

Having completely given up on getting away, I go with my last resort. "Those nature documentaries better be freaking right," I mumble to myself. I crouch down into the water, making myself as small as possible hoping that the creature doesn't see me as a threat any longer. I then close my eyes tightly, completely thinking I am about to get mauled anyway.

I stand firm-- or as firm as shaking legs will allow-- and face the beast head on, holding my pack out in front of me just in case. It sounds large, but not so much that I might not be able to frighten it off, or at least get it to a halt.

The beast skids to a stop, ultimately not fast enough to avoid plowing into you. You're tackled by the mountain of fluff; a makoatl much larger than a normal makoatl-- in fact, the size of a large bear. It yelps as it runs into you, backing up as soon as it manages to get back to its footing. The beast sits down across from you, sizing you up. Food or friend? It's really wracking its brain.

Dr-Paine In reply to MakoStaffParty [2016-09-15 01:41:46 +0000 UTC]

"Oh fuck--"

The words slip out before I can really stop myself, but what can you do? I was... Well, I was mistaken. Very, deeply, horribly mistaken about the size, but at least the plan kind of worked? Between the mako's fluff and my pack, I was only knocked into the sand, slightly winded but no worse for wear and it doesn't sound like anything in the bag's broken, either.

I'm a little surprised the mako didn't just... start mauling me here and now, honestly. It seems intrigued, so that seems like a good start... and maybe hungry? Even if not, food is usually a good offering... right?

I set the pack down, keeping every movement slow and obvious. "So... ah... you're just hungry, I bet?" I say, keeping low, meeting its eyes only for a moment, I don't want to risk seeming too challenging. "Here, I brought some food in case... well, something like this happened," I say, giving a small laugh. I've gotten lost on hikes before, so I'm used to carrying a bit of everything, especially snacks.

"Here... hm, I'm not sure if you've got any different food requirements, but... you like jerky?" I ask, opening up a pack of dried beef, tossing a couple of the larger pieces towards the mako.

MakoStaffParty In reply to Dr-Paine [2016-09-15 02:23:15 +0000 UTC]

It stays in place, watching you intently. There are a few times it begins to grow impatient and considers just eating you, but it waits. It doubts it can open the pack as well as your weird opposable thumbs can. Your words are a foreign language, all sound and tone. You seem docile enough, though; not that it ever felt at danger. It sniffs as you throw the jerky on over, and lowers its head. In the most peculiar fashion it picks up the jerky with its long tongue, as flexible as a hand, and flicks it into its mouth.

The jerky is a hit! It barks, tail wagging. Where's the next snack?

Dr-Paine In reply to MakoStaffParty [2016-09-15 02:29:46 +0000 UTC]

It takes a lot for me to not jump at the sight of that tongue... helps that the shock wears off fast, replaced by curiosity and relief that the mako seemed to enjoy the snack after all! This certainly wasn't any ordinary mako, but... well, it seemed friendly enough now that the initial confrontation had passed. Even wagging its tail! That... I certainly wasn't expecting that, but it certainly seems like a good sign.

"Alright, there you go," I say with a grin, careful not to get too excited-- last thing I want is to startle it! ... Them? Clearly is intelligent, it feels rude saying 'it' all the time.

"Alright, here, you can have the whole pack," I say, emptying it out in front of them and sitting down as well. "Hm... what about drinks, you thirsty?" I ask, opening up a couple bottles of water. "Maybe you've been lost for hours and just need some time to rest too, huh?" I say, giving a small smile. "Anyone'd be angry in that situation, yeah..."

MakoStaffParty In reply to Dr-Paine [2016-09-15 02:41:15 +0000 UTC]

Your excitement, however tiny, is infectious! They bark in response to your words, despite not understanding much but your friendly tone. As you empty the pack, the beast springs back to its feet. Everything in your pack is explored with its long tongue, leaving an awful film of viscous saliva all over everything. Your phone catches its interest the most, and before you can do much about it, the phone has found its way down the makoatl's gullet.

Displeased with how it tasted (as you can only imagine how great a phone tastes) it backs off of the items a bit. As you offer a water bottle, they are a little bit more cautious. Unable to really understand the technology at play, they grab it with their tongue and pull it into their mouth. The sound of plastic being crushed by their large teeth is an awful symphony, and the water drains out of their large mouth.

They seem pretty interested in chewing the bottle, though.

"Oh..."

Well, I'm pretty sure the last couple snaps did send, so at least my friends got a record of the trip on the off chance I die out here, honestly I'm more upset over the loss of months of work on my dragon sim, but... what can you do? I'm not unfamiliar with things getting chewed up and broken anyway, you stop getting too attached after a while.  .... really glad I left my laptop in the hotel, though, I can't imagine what that slime would do to it!

"Well... uh... huh. I hope you enjoyed that?" I say, giving a strained smile as the mako swallows the phone. "And. oh, I was... going to help you with that, but... okay," I add, unable to hold back a sympathetic wince as they bite the bottle, none of that can possibly taste good. Can't blame them for liking chewing it, and I'm really glad they didn't snap up my glowsticks... though that might've looked pretty neat!

"Feeling better there, bud?" I ask, taking out a pack of chips that had been mostly spared. I eat a couple myself, before setting a few out for the mako, wanting to reinforce that yes, I mean them no harm and just want to try and share. "Wish we could talk... I wonder if you live out here? I think I heard something about... something like you. Big ocean beast, y'know? Kind of awesome I get to actually meet you," I grin. "... wish I'd gotten a picture out before..." I sigh, drawing my knees up to my chest and resting my forehead there. "You know, even with the phone I'd be pretty fucked, I couldn't get a signal and I can't make heads or tails of the map," I mumble, the reality of the situation really starting to sink in. "Even if I tried to go back... I don't know where to even begin, there's... the beach, woods, I barely even know the city... probably something else'll find me and gobble me up..."

They sense you're alltogether unpleased with them devouring your... thing. They turn away, making a series of awful retching noises. After what feels like an eternity, it turns back to you, phone in tongue. It offers the item back to you, dripping with saliva and partially eaten up by stomach acid. They drop it into your hands, pleased with their work, before laying down in the sand.

They seem pretty at ease with you now, scooping up the chips you've given them. You can tell by the twist of their face that maybe the salt content is a bit much for them. They have no clue what you're saying, but your voice is calming; keeping them at bay and relaxed.

They listen to you, before moving back up to their feet and nudging you with their wet, sandy nose. They bark, before moving their head towards the water. Maybe they want you to follow them?

It takes me a moment before I realize just what the Mako's dropped by me, and... well, somehow I find myself smiling at the sight of the mangled phone, believe it or not.

"That... damn, bud," I say with a soft laugh, wiping away a couple small tears that had formed and fell before I could help it. "That's a pretty neat trick you got there." I scoop up the phone, setting it in a pocket of my bag-- with any luck, the card'll still be readable, I can at least save that much trouble. Or, hey, I can at least prove the encounter some now... assuming I ever do get out of this.

I smile again as the mako nudges me, watching their curious behavior.

"You... uh... ah, what the hell?" I shrug, giving a small smile and kicking off my shoes. "Lead the way, uh... geez, I really need something to call you," I say with a small laugh. "Unless you got some kinda name already. Mine's Paine, for the record."

I'm not entirely sure why I keep talking to them, but... hey, they seem to not mind it too much, and it helps things feel less lonely, so why not?

Pleased with your adventurous spirit, the mako leads you to the water's edge. They lay down and bark. Do they want you to ride them?

Well, only one way to find out.
