Description Cthulhu and Cthylla
I kinda wanted to go for a more 'anthropomorphic' design.
(I think Nyarlahotep is the only one that has a truly 'human' form)

I love the design of this character, by the way. Very clever melding of forms.

Thank you very much!
Sadly digital coloring (or coloring in general) has never much been my forte.
But that doesn't mean I won't try!

Your work is so lovely, by the by, please keep it up!

"fun fact" on Nyarlthotep, each of his forms was said to be inconceivable and cause madness to a different species in the universe. Meaning that the human form is beyond comprehension to something out that, and thus would regard humans as mind shattering abominations.

-which became the inspiration for a reversed starfish aliens thing I like to do from time to time.

one reason it feels right that at least some of the great old ones would have human and partially human forms as they are a mix and precursor for all the other horrors.

I wouldn't call Nyarlathotep's "human" form, human really, considering how it possesses an aura of pure insanity and wrongness.

As for the Great Old Ones such as Cthulhu and Cthylla, I'd doubt they'd have a real true form either, but like Nyarlathotep (Other God), a shape-shifter. Great Old One's aren't made out of matter, so it's not impossible to imagine they could take any form that pleases them or any other members of their "race".

So like most Lovecrat and those that follow in his footsteps (Not you Derleth, go crawl back into that cave of yours), mostly subjective and left entirely up to the reader to build upon what they believe, or rip apart the text to search for deeper meaning. The four eyes for Cthylla does look cool though, and this is from a hardcore Lovecraft fan who guards his copy of Lovecraft's complete collection greater than an Ultramarine does his Codex.

Well hence why I said 'I think-'
I haven't read any Lovecraft mythos outside of Dunwich Horror, and even that
was read mostly due to a Fallout 3 mission (and curiosity).
I enjoy the Cthulhu subculture more than the actual Lovecraft mythos/fiction
mostly due to the source-material (while being DAMN good horror stories) are
too dreary for my taste. I like comedy, end of the world/universe/existence
tends to bum me out somewhat.

So while I personally do not delve into the whole fictional universe Lovecraft
created, I do appreciate the man's work and the insanity it caused, HA! lol

Wyzilla In reply to MaKo85 [2014-02-23 08:00:40 +0000 UTC]

Lovecraft's work is actually fairly humorous at times, he often self-parodies his own extremely flowery (if not poetic, it's like the antithesis of Dickens dry and over-stretched writing), absurd situations, and simply "grimdarkness" to such a point that it's comedic on just how fucked you are in Lovecraft's works. It also depends on what the story is. I'd imagine you'd enjoy some of the more completely outlandish and poetic works then the actual stories of utter destruction such as Nyarlathotep, the Rats in the Walls, and The Hound.

But yes, woe is it to be a knowledgeable, curious person in Lovecraft. Those intelligent minds cursed with curiosity are better served joining the cults of the Great Old Ones, in which is their only salvation. As the only fate of a protagonist in Lovecraft is to be driven insane, typically on immediate exposure- and then either murdering and devouring the person nearest you or simply committing suicide to make the horrible images in your mind go away.

Although that does remind me, Deep Ones are probably the most non-threatening and not actually despicable creatures in Lovecraft, as they actually offer mankind means to survive the awakening of Cthulhu and the rest of the Great Old Ones whenever the stars a finally aligned.
(From the view of a mortal human possessing morals that is.)

In that case Cthulhu would be female and Cthylla male, lol.

She is his daughter, his 'favorite' offspring to be precise.
She appeared later in the Lovecraft mythos by another author.

I do :3

Although Cthylla is described as being 'red' with 6 eyes and somewhat resembling the Greek monster she was named after, I wanted to portray her as more feminine and 'delicate'. (despite the fact she is as bad as her father )

And yep, that is one of Cthulhu's kids, his favorite.
Like father like daughter

Nyarlahotep was the only human form since the mother was human, if I remember the story correctly. An interesting way that the brother was concealed in the house for so long until he just got fed up and left.

I think you're thinking of Nyarlahotep's son from the 'Dunwich Horror', whom was originally human due to his mother, but slowly shifted to his father's heritage.

Interestingly Nodens and Gnarly Harly don't seem to get along.
And by sheer coincidence(?) they're the only Outer Gods to ever take human form.

Well they never really seem to have a 'solid' purpose other than 'let's kick humanity out of our turf.'
Then again, Cthulhu is the representation of the chaotic nature of humanity, and he's STILL lower on the totem pole.
I say do like the blind idiot God, party till you see the angles! lol

Although, I can understand that Nyarlathotep gets a bit cranky.
After all, he's the guy who has to carry out the orders issued by a blind idiot god. And those orders might not even be comprehensible to him!

Nyarlathotep is definitely a god with a serious risk of getting the divine/alien equivalent of an ulcer.
