I wish I had some lofty story behind this, but I just made it in effort to improve at environments. I imagined it as a school in a fantasy world for students learning magic. It didn't come easily - I definitely need more practice at environments.

Well, as far as the structure of the piece is concerned, the perspective seems a bit off in some places, and if you want to give it the impact that you were elluding too in the links you gave, then theres some things you can do that i do that tend to help. place your color pallet more in the middle of the picker, at least to start. try to compact your whole color range leaving really dark or really light things, and or really saturated things for accents. Then at the end go back and saturate pieces of the painting you want emphisis, and blow out the lighting on some parts a bit. Its a bit harder, and a bit more time consuming to do, but the results are well worth it.

I didn't use any for the architecture (which was probably a mistake, as I am certainly no architect), but I did look at the styles and roughness of these artists' work as inspiration for how to render an environment: [link] [link] I didn't really reach their level of awesome, but they're an inspiration nonetheless
