Description
Spring, Alaska, 2015
(blood & gore warning on the story)
It was Aguta and Ghostface's first hunt together.
Isabella had not yet returned from her travels, and Aguta had stumbled upon Ghostface - a lone adult male, on his travels. Ghostface, who had only just reached adult hood, took the older and more wise Aguta as his role model, and refused to leave his side. And then Aguta, who usually and prefered to travel and live solo, had a pack.
It was spring, and out on the tundra, the ice bergs were beginning to melt and the water slowly carved patterns through the frozen land once again. On this particular night, it was particulalry cool, despite the season. Aguta and Ghostface had not eaten in 4 days, and were desperate for a decent meal. Ghostface, desperate to prove himself, was the first to pick up on the male walrus' sent.
He was older, and smelt of sickness. This was an advantage to the two large Tokota's, filling them with slight confidence. However, to their dismay upon closer inspection of the walrus, they realised it was potentially stranded on an iceberg - the walrus was in its element, and the pair of Tokota's, as adept swimmers they were, could not compete with a water dwelling mammal.
They had to think quickly, and wittily. The walrus had now picked up on their scent, and had become restless. It sensed the danger ahead, but was hesitant to enter the water due to its weak state. Aguta, being the more knowledgeable of the pair, sensed this, and began to develop his plan of attack.
The two Tokota's had now reached the iceberg on which the now heavily agitated walrus was resting. Aguta howled to the moon, a shrill cry to mark the start of a bloody hunt, and they began. Ghostface waded through the thankfully shallow water around the iceberg; his bulky and significantly larger frame (compared to Aguta) aiding him in intimidating the large seal. The walrus was still hesitant to enter the water, but was now sliding closer and closer to the edge of the ice berg. The two Tokota's had to act now, or they would go hungry.
Aguta, a lighter and more agile Tokota, pounced. He splashed through the water straight at the walrus, while Ghostface then lunged for its thick and blubbery throat, relying on his weight and sheer strength to help keep the massive animal down. Aguta latched onto its tail, trying to keep it under control while the walrus struggled. Maybe it was the hunger, the sheer desperation, or the hunt under direct moonlight, but the young and inexperienced Ghostface managed to tear through to the throat of the Walrus and end its suffering. Bloodied and exhausted, the Tokotas growled at eachother in mutual achievement, and then feasted with their hungry mouths.
Aguta and Ghostface's first hunt together. (I know seal hunting isn't open right now so i'll just save this for when it is.) Used a bunch of references from google for this, but it was mostly freehand (yay!). So happy to do some art again even though its rushed/average/meh. Uni is taking over my lyfffffffff.
