Description Giambologna (Flemish-born Italian Mannerist Sculptor, 1529-1608) carved his Hercules and the Centaur (standing in the gallery of sculptures at the Piazza della Signoria) at the most agonizing moment of their battle, when Hercules bends the Centaur's back to the point where it is about to snap. This is Mannerism, a style which occured during High Renaissance (with Michelangelo being the most magnificent representative) and in which writhing figures of hypernatural muscular bodies are carved out.
