Description Scuttle is now finished, has been photographed and attached to his plinth and is just waiting for Monday so he can be set up in the exhibition space for the next 17 days!

For those who don't know, he has silicone face, hands and feet, faux fur body with a wire armature, robotic eyes that go up, down, left and right, and squirrel hairs punched individually into his silicone parts. The original piece was sculpted in WED clay, moulded in Crystacal R and finally cast in transluscent Zhermack ZA13 silicone, seamed and cleaned up then painted with oil paints.

Here's the first image in my folio, it's an A2 portfolio and this is a full bleed print - it came out really nicely and I think it's a good statement to start on!

This will also be handed out for free as a postcard at the degree show as a glorified business card.

I'm currently editing a fancy-schmancy HD video of working on Scuttle at the moment. Partly as documentation for grading and partly because I want to and I think you guys would like it, especially considering how much interest and support there has been from the pictures I submitted in my scraps. Everyone who followed the making of Scuttle has my deepest gratitude, as I said in my journal, it was thanks to you guys I stayed so enthusiastic with making him this whole time.

It's been a long haul, but it's not over yet! Expect more photos soon of my final space, Scuttle in situ, my portfolio and some full-body pictures too.

Thanks for looking!

Such a delightful shot of him! That eye!!! I'm sure it made an awesome postcard.

Hey, thank you! I was disappointed at how little space illustration got in general as Scuttle would have looked a lot better in one of the areas the fine artists got.. but I got a lot of good feedback so I'm happy, I guess!

Well, thats good. The space was small, but I don't think it took anything away from the quality of the work. I was pretty impressed with illustration's turn out this year actually. There was some awesome stuff. It kind of makes me wish I'd studied illustration myself, instead of animation.

Hehe I wouldn't have recommended that, the tutors were totally unhelpful throughout the entire year. It was a real uphill struggle getting Scuttle done, especially considering how he really wasn't illustration in the traditional sense. But yeah, it was a great show, everyone really pulled through.

The eyes are the most important part of any sculpture I think! They get so much emotion across - which is really what my fourth year project was all about.
The video got the best of me, it's not going to be HD anymore but slightly less - like 720p or something - but still decent quality.

A lot of it was a happy accident - the mould didn't come out perfect so there were a lot of imperfections in the cast but then that's what makes it more realistic I suppose! But yeah punching in the hairs was pretty time consuming..

thats great he's finally done HE looks so great.

Was he the only thing you had to finish before May 20th?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Magweno In reply to MarieBlack07 [2011-05-08 09:59:21 +0000 UTC]

I KNOW RIGHT *faint*

No I had to put together a full portfolio so editing and printing a lot of stuff, fighting with InDesign, I also had to paint three pictures for the wall but that didn't take very long... Also collating and organising all my research and development over the past year - that's my next job, now that Scuttle's done.

MarieBlack07 In reply to Magweno [2011-05-08 11:33:30 +0000 UTC]

well its good that the main piece is done. that must take a lot off your shoulders. Now its just the tedious stuff to go but I'm sure you'll be happy when its all done

Yeah I'm working on a video just now, it needs to be edited though unlike the silly WIP ones I've been putting on YouTube. Yeah I'm pretty happy with him, I mean it could have gone better but I learnt a lot and he's only the beginning!
