this works best on a program where you can use layers. because some of the smaller details are lower opacity, what I do is color in an entire layer beneath this layer for the base, then select [with target on lineart layer] everywhere outside the lineart, then keep the selection while going to the color layer and erasing anywhere now-selected and outside the lines. then lock/preserve opacity/etc the color layer and color on that.
