Rabbitbite came to his paws, stepping away from Sootstar and looking quietly at his defeated opponent. His heart was still beating hard, his limbs loose from the sparring match. It was almost too good to be true; it was vindication, surely a sign from StarClan— he had beaten the leader of that hated Clan, with his own paws. He held his chin high, waiting for Sootstar to speak.

“You know, I always admired you. Next time, don’t go easy on me.” The black tom had a light smile on his face, clearly trying to make a joke.

Rabbitbite's insides rebelled. Sootstar, deputy of Gorsestar, did not get to make jokes at him; Sootstar, former Clanmate, had always admired him; Sootstar, loser in battle, was making a joke; Sootstar, Clan leader, was losing gracefully. Rabbitbite stared at him, unable to react, even in shock. A lightning-speed internal argument raged within him. His better self spoke in Her voice and pleaded for reconciliation; his bitter self raged that he ought to spit on the ground and leave. He struggled for a few heartbeats before managing to make words come to his lips:

“I don’t like what you stand for," Rabbitbite meowed in a low tone, "I don’t like how you got where you are, and I don’t like your Clan, but you… you’re fine. And, had things been different, I think she would have liked you too.”

Rabbitbite turned and vanished into the crowd to await the next match. He couldn't stand to stay in proximity with Sootstar for another heartbeat; he needed to clear his head, or at least distract himself.
