I really enjoy this. The treatment of the model, along with the cracked ground married with the exquisitely soft sky and moon; the simplicity of the heart lock and key tree, all very clean = lovely.

I kinda disagree with these suggestions...the sky being bright, with good strong shadows...gives a surreal feeling, subtly...it's an emphasis that this is NOT normal reality. Further, the whiteness of the tree, when it's such a lovely apricot atmosphere, yet enough shade to give strong shadows...why is it like that?...because it's not normal reality.
I think it works...if it was all connected, might be more normal, less sur-real. I guess I would want to see both, but I think it might not improve the triangular (classic) balance of the gray-white tree, and the green and white model, against the peachy sky, accented with red hearts and purple flowers, with the triangle completed by the strong tree shadow. Just my thoughts today (I looked at this image last week, and thought then you might be right Dan, but with a second look days later, I disagree).

Hurray! Someone finally disagreed with my critique!!
The critique I gave is based on what I know as an artist and from reality. However, being this is a surreal piece those don't totally matter. As it is I based a little of my critique around my opinion. This piece following the Challenge requirements well, but in my point of view (and I prefer realism, however surreal it may be) there were a few things that looked out of place.
I agree with you and :devmaellinn: that the overall contrast of the piece is good and the tree helps in that sense. That said, the challenge is based around surrealism - as crazy as everything looks, the idea is for it to look realistic in some way. In a way - abstract realism.
Please don't misunderstand me though I am not upset or offended by your disaggreeing with me suggestions. They are, after all, only suggestions. They are to a degree, based on my opinion of art and reality (and I will admit, surreal art isn't one of my strong points, although I do appreciate it a lot).
I do agree completely in one area though - the title is great
Thanks
Dan

Plus, it's like there is something bright, just beyond the tree to the right, that gives the strong shadows, brightness in foreground; just realized the hearts and keys don't have shadows....

whoops, I don't know how I missed those little shadows (good job!) (I think I saw them the first time, but missed them second day I viewed)
