I have done in the past - but not on any of these pieces. It can get some good results, but is so damaging to the paper you could badly effect the longevity of any painting. Do you?

Ah. You've explained the problem in one. You don't use white with watercolour at all. The white that you see in all my watercolours is the paper. If you use white on top of watercolours it will appear grey, so you just have to leave the paper clean and you will get a brilliant white. Likewise all colours that need to be paler - you add water to make the paint thinner so the white of your paper shows through.
Look closely at mine and you'll see it's just the paper. It does mean some planning of course - you have to be careful not to paint over any areas you want to be white or pale. You can use masking fluid to do that - you paint it over white areas (ie petals of a daisy) to start with and then remove it later in the painting when you are ready - it keeps them clean. Some white areas are best "lifted out" for a softer edge... Clouds, for example... ie you paint a blue sky and then (while the blue is wet) you lift out your clouds with a clean damp brush or a clean damp bit of scrunched kitchen roll. Nb this MUST be done quickly while the sky blue is still wet.
I very occasionally use white for tiny highlights (ie the glisten in an eye) if I've accidentally lost them in the painting. But that's it.
Try painting a picture without any white paint (copy one of mine if you like) and you'll soon find it all makes sense! Hope this helps.

No problem. Looked at your page and you really do have talent - you could easily master watercolours. Absolutely loved the A level piece and have featured it. Hope you get a good grade - have taught A level, so can see you should!

nice, amazing work for such a tough medium. lol. I cheat, I use acrylic as watercolour. Also, I like the texture from the watercolour paper. It really adds a lot to this image.

Crikey - that's not cheating - acrylics as watercolour has to be the most difficult thing to do. Yes, you can lay washes on top of each other easily, but make a mistake and you're screwed. Well done you!
