Description
This is my second attempt to scan this image in and I am now happy with it. So this is now available as a print as the quality is finally there!I have also put on a cropped version as some of you think it looks better like that. I quite like this as you can see the green underpainting (I do all my portraits as a green tonal painting and then build up the colour from that - this is why the reds seem so strong in it - they are fighting the complementary colour).

I love the composition, the feeling of negative space, and I love her hands and arms especially. Thank you for writing about the way you use green underneath a portrait - is that like the Impressionists painting the canvas first with a 'ground'?

Yes, it is a ground. The ground can be any colour, but I find if you use the complementary you can get stunning results. For example, if you've got a large area of plain bright blue sky. You can first paint the whole thing in a complementary (opposite) colour as a ground, a nice deep red orange. Then paint the bright blue on top, but leave tiny little slivvers of orange here and there. The whole thing will simply vibrate and the effect is just wonderful. You can do it with any colour, any subject. Have a go!

I love your technique. Its quite strange because I often do my paintings as a blue underpainting and then build up the colour but I never really noticed if this has an effect on the top colours. Nice composition too.

Thank you. The secret is to use base colours that are predominantly complementaries. So if you wanted to paint a gorgeous turquoise blue sky, paint a deep bright orange flat wash under it first. Then paint your bright turquoise blue on top allowing the occasional little spark of orange to show through. It makes a flat area of colour leap and vibrate in a wonderful way - only works with oil or acrylic though.
