Who's the black private dick
That's a sex machine to all the chicks?
SHAFT!
Ya damn right!
Who is the man that would risk his neck
For his brother man?
SHAFT!
Can you dig it?
Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?
SHAFT!
Right On!
They say this cat Shaft is a bad mother
SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft.
THEN WE CAN DIG IT!
He's a complicated man
But no one understands him but his woman
JOHN SHAFT!

That's fricken amazing. The effects of the rain and the glow, the BG, and such all add to the mysterious mood that I'm feeling from this. Very nice.

Ok, I see a bunch of stuff in this image that I'm sure you could improve drastically with a bit of thought. I'm not going to try and hurt your feelings here, just list some stuff I KNOW many people find useful, ok?
/end disclaimer
I can't help but notice that the super-glossy/glowing edges style of rendering is an ineffective way to try and describe actual forms, and looks really odd when put besides muted, 'calm' objects like the trees.
The shiny style is nice in a semi-abstract kinda way, on 2D stylised images, but falls short if you're going for anything more than that (i.e figurative and illustrative).
The colours are kinda unattractive IMHO - any damp, earthy, foresty kinda mood is killed by the over-saturated green and lack of colour range. Colour theory helps with this, as does studing real scenes, photos etc. If you have a clear photo of a scene, you can learn how the colours work through colourpicking and messing around in PS.
I think Craig Mullins ([link] ) is very good at describing mood through colour, especially damp rainy forests (eg [link] )
Also the 3 elements (dragon, trees, rain) are presented as very seperate, so the picture comes across as pieced-together, or even like a PS collage. One thing I've noticed that can hold an image together is texture, not some crappy overlayed photo texture (as seen in gothy photomanips everywhere) but proper painted texture. Reference is great for this (eg a photo of a forest floor).
When images are as smooth and digital-looking as this, there's simply not enough to attract and interest the eye and the image seems very simple and plain. Also textures, like every other element mentioned, help set a scene and a mood. Don't neglect them!
If you want to learn to make great compositions, I'd suggest studying traditional compositions, old masters have amazing stuff (try www.artrenewal.org) and fantasy artists like brom and frazetta might give some inspiration, too.
Last thing, if you have a certain character and intend to use him-her in multiple images, an awesome trick to use is to make a model, be it real (outta sculpy, clay, paper mache, whatever) or in a 3D progam if you know how to use one, and draw a bunch of studies from this model to get a really good understanding of him/her from different angles and stuff. Also, making the model forces you to really think about the character's 'look', so it's a part of the design process too (This dragon looks very vaguely thought out, like you haven't thought about his/her design much beyond the dragony profile shape and the colour.)
And when you wanna do a proper picture of them you can stick the model in certain lighting and use it for reference.
Excuse the novel-sized comment
Have a great day
