The trip can be affordable.  Watch for sales on Quantas.  We flew Business class for well over 60% off their regular fare.  With the currency exchange rate in our favor everything was about 25-35% less than the USD.  Takes planning but well worth it.  Also use a charge card that doesn't charge a transaction fee for currency exchange. Food for thought.
