Description

Inspired by contemporary artist Joshua Miels' portraits.

Joshua Miels looks to capture the vulnerability of people and the emotions that people try to hide from others. I studied his technique and the expressions in his portraits, and I've noticed that he often paints male portraits. This is maybe because men find it harder to express their feelings. Men are taught not to feel, not to cry, and not to be emotional. People shouldn't tell a man to "man up" and hide his feelings. A man shouldn't be afraid to cry.

I have always been a fan of rougher-looking drawings personally, in fact, I have a very rough style myself, so seeing something like this with such dynamic, life-like strokes is like candy to my eyes. Even the addition of the seemingly random splotches of colder colors amidst the face's warmer tones makes the picture feel gritty and real. The hair looks great, each grouping of strands shining nicely, and the shading is wonderful too, especially the way it has such a sharp shape that contrasts the softness of the rest of the image.

As for the expression, I feel it. It feels like a very personal stare, as if the man longs for his goal and sees it in his sights, but is out of its reach. Cheesy to say, I know, but I feel it.

One thing I could say you could improve on is the background. I'm not saying he should be in a forest, or on a building, or anything complex that would draw away from the face. Personally, a darker gradient would work a little better than the color explosion imo. The way it is, it's too chaotic in the back and it competes for attention with the face itself. Something like a desaturated orange or a darker lavender would work great if it were a gradient in the back.

All in all, a lovely piece. Keep up the good work!
