Description
The Smilodon populator is the largest cat known to have ever lived, with a shoulder height of 1.4 meters and weight of up to 500 kg. Larger than the famous Smilodon Fatalis, commonly known as the saber-toothed tiger, although it isn't a tiger.
Actually the usage of the word cat is in some cases a misnomer, as many species referred to as saber-toothed "cats" are not closely related to modern cats (Felidae).

The big cats alive today have what is known as a "ghost lineage". At present we only know the ancestry of big cats up to about 3.5 million years ago. Predators like this have always been relatively small in numbers compared to other animals and also are rather solitary animals or live in small groups, so finding fossils is difficult.
