Description So this is one of my recent jewelry designs (August 2011, outside of school). I liked the look in the Iron Druid Chronicles, so I designed a similar amulet (minor tweaks). I aged and also darkened the metal so it looked like it went through a few centuries. Then added ink engraved, Celtic symbols accordingly. Also according to the third book, our hero gains a fulgurite rock (petrified lightning) that he puts on his amulet. So I then added fulgurite to the back.

Looks just like the one in the book! Great job! Did you make it for a costume or just for fun?

It was mainly a fun challenge for me after reading the books. I occasionally do commissions of it in Spring andΒ Summertime, though Badali Jewelry has some lovely, professionalΒ versions of it too.

I would love to commission one of these, I fell in love with the book a while back and truly want to have an amulet like the druids.

Okay, but currently I'm finishing up some Spring art classes, alongside a full-time job, and finishing a large commission piece. I could probably work on the Iron Druid amulet perhaps in late May when it's not this hectic.

But if you're interested, send me details such as...
-Do you prefer version 1 [link] or version 2 [link] of the amulet as a commission and why?
-Do you have a measurement preference for the chain in inches (as you could have it loose, or in a more choker style)?
-For the chain do you prefer any certain colors there?
-For the chain do you want it in twine cord or leather? (This comes down to weather you look for comfort, style, or authenticity in it.)

i love your version 2 it just is more my style. i like my necklaces to be a close fit but not to a choker poing as soon as i can grab some measuring tape ill measure it out. black is my favorite color or a really ancient looking silver. i like leather when it comes down to it. its more comfortable. and thanks for getting back to me, you make an amazing necklace.

It's kinda on special commission during late Spring and Summer (my less busy seasons).

So... I've gotta ask. How long did it take to make this, and what materials did you use (if you wouldn't mind my asking)? I am looking to make/buy something similar to this for my friend for Christmas, so your reply would be greatly appreciated!

Been awhile since I used them, but I know I got the majority of the supplies from Hobby Lobby (though I'm sure most art stores have metal scraps and twine). I just looked for items that looked relatively similar to the published description of the amulet from the Iron Druid books. I did take some liberties though with this twine. I then drilled extra holes for the charms, and hammered in the markings. Using a watered-down etchant solution it then aged it and deepened the indents. Finally I just strung it together in an under-over pattern.
Basically it comes down to a mix of finding the right supplies for yourself. And then working in your design version of it. The design has the potential for different clasps or braiding if wanted.

Oh, also on time period of work. It varies depending on the time you have. I work full-time, so I only got 2-3 hours of work done a night. I think it took 5-7 days (including finding the art supplies).

Okay, I have no idea what book you were talking about. But I got to say, this is beautiful work. I loved how you aged the metal and made it look like something you would find from centuries past. Really, this is quite beautiful and very well done.

Thanks.

Yeah, it's from this urban fantasy series that came out called The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. It's full of pretty much every supernatural creature known to man, along with multiple god pantheons (kinda like in Neil Gaiman's American Gods). The amulet plays a pivotal role in it for the main druid character, Atticus.

Thank you for explaining a bit. Totally appreciated that. I am currently looking the book up on Amazon. (bookworm here). You did a marvelous job on the necklace.

Certainly.

The first novel (out of 4 published so far) is Hounded. But also on Kevin Hearne's website he has a "goodies" page with short stories from the series at the bottom. [link]
They act as in-betweens or side stories from the full novels. The "Clan Rathskeller" is a prequel short story set shortly before the first book. "The Test of Mettle" one is a short story set after book 3 (so it's like #3.5).

Well like I said, thank you. I looked them up on Amazon and sent a preview to my kindle fire. My sister and I laughed because she LOVES anything Ireland and when she found out that the main guy was Irish..and that the main bad guy was a Celtic God...she FLIPPED! We are thinking of reading it together.
