I really really like dogs and wolfs. I really really like the way you shoot them. But being constructive, the background noise is really messing the image up. I wonder why is there so much grain on the background? Did you film in night? or was your ISO over 3200? or did you use the sharpen tool in PS not too accurately? Anyway, the photo is still amazing, however, i recommend you really taking a look into the noise problem.
Cheers!

Thank you
I just checked... there is no real bad graining in the original photo, so I guess it must be the post processing. The photo was taken on f/5.6 at 1/250s on ISO 640. The light conditions were awful, and only having a 28-300 f3.5-5.6 didn't help either Sometimes I'd like to remove all my old photos *g*
The 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II USM performs much better in such conditions.

Thanks for the feedback!

Your welcome! It often happens that grain, which acrually is present in the original photo, simply isn't visible enough, however, when adding contrast/sharpening etc it becomes more and more visible resulting in quite mentionable noise.
In such situations i'd recommend using the lasso tool for selecting specific segments of the image and then working with them separately, e.g. selecting the background and trying to use the reduce noise filter or even before adding any masks/contrast puting the background to another layer so that it wouldn't receive any of the above.
If you use CS5, you most likely won't meet any difficulties doing that even with the wolfs fur. For more detailed information on the new CS5 features(especially the one you may need, which helps in selecting hair) follow this link: [link]

And sorry for my being so abusive
Good luck!

Well, I usually use the masking tool if I need to apply an unsharp mask, but generally, I don't do that when uploading stuff to deviantART that's not meant to be printed. Then I normally apply an unsharp mask to the complete photo to get the sharpness back that's lost due to the extreme resizing. When working with 100% crops for print, usually no sharpening is required since the photos (at least those taken with the new 70-200) are tack sharp already.

Why unsharp mask for sharpening? Why not high pass filter? It provides a more accurate sharpening, doesn't it?

Well, I dunno. Honestly, I've never used the high pass filter for sharpening... just tried it and don't see much of a difference in the result. Well, maybe I'll fiddle with it some more later on
