a lightsaber IS a plasma blade

A lightsaber as per Star Wars lore has a blade that’s actually made of light; the plasma is a by-product of its contact with matter.Β  At least, it was until The Force Awakens; I haven’t kept up with the canon since, so I have no idea whether that’s changed.

I’ll try and find some, but upon reflection, you’re probably right.

I keep on seeing the term β€œmassless” mentioned in Expanded Universe books and was pretty sure it showed up in at least one prequel novelization; I’ll go read those again when I have time.Β  Anyhow, a lack of mass implies that the blade is not composed of plasma.Β  However, based on the movement patterns of lightsaber combat, the blades must have at least inertial, if not gravitational, mass; since photons only seem to exhibit behaviour similar to that of massive particles, such as staying in one place , under very cold conditions, and inertial mass is still a sort of mass (and seems inextricably linked to gravitational mass), lightsabers probably aren’t pure light.

I feel sort of silly for taking this stuff so seriously.

Haha, hey bro, don't feel bad for taking things seriously. The fact that the EU took all the science fantasy of star wars and actually turned it into science fiction is the main reason why I was always more of a fan of it than the actual movie series (and why i fucking loathe the new series).

But if you really wnat to know you don;t have to spend so much time conceptualizing and imagining, sinc ethere's 40 years of fandom that has done that for you, a quick look at wookiepedia, switching over to the 'legends' tabe, will shwo you what the EU canon had established.

"...the lightsaber, also referred to as the "laser sword" by those who were unfamiliar with it, was a distinctive weapon, the very image of which was inextricably bound with the mythos of the Jedi Order and their polar opposites, the Sith [...] The weapon consisted of a blade of pure plasma emitted from the hilt and suspended in a force containment field. The field contained the immense heat of the plasma, protecting the wielder, and allowed the blade to keep its shape."

So yep, the 'light'saber is actually basically exactly the same weapon as halo's plasma swords (at least, when in the hands of a non force sensitive who can't draw on the power inside the force crystal that generates the plasma), only in a more traditional sword shape.

As a bonus, they have far more sources than I do.

Indeed, browsing that wiki for a few hours is a real good way to find out about all the wild, weird, wonderful and downright silly stuff (look up 'force colours' and how they somehow allow teleportation) that the EU has spun out in over 4 decades of largely fan-contributed development and growth of the overall SW mythos. I'll never say it was a wholly sane idea of Lucas Arts to hand out licences like they were halloween candy, but it certainly allowed for the fandom to grow into an impressive cultural phenomena if nothing else.

I think its awesome, my one concern is the energy sword. Not because its become cliche in sci fi, rather its because I don't thing you can add the robot's strength bonus to damage. For example, say his quarry is hiding behind an energy shield, or has an energy sword to parry your bot's sword, any momentum behind your samurai's swing will lost when the sword collides with opposing energy field.

Or maybe I'm thinking too much about this type of stuff and that's why I haven't gotten any art done in a while
