Description An 8x10 Pencil with black marker sketch based of an image from

Trying out some slight abstraction. I think I should have made the chest and arm a little more flat to pop out the face more.

Very good use of positive and negative space in this image. I see exactly what you were attempting here. Well... let me rephrase that and say... I see what speaks to ME in this piece. Keep drawing!

Mabrelle has some good points in her later critiques. I wish she took the time in her first post to say those things instead of bashing your art with the simplistic words of 'anatomy sucks'. IT was nice of her to come back and explain herself later though, so she did make up for it . I hope she realises that not everyone has the eye for anatomy and design that she does and that many artists will take years, if not decades, to train themselves. Best of luck to both of you.

lips are too big, eye looks like a peach, jaw is strange, starting drawing from photos is a mistake, you should practice with nature first, draw yourself from a mirror, it's a good exercise
and try shading more delicate, I know it's not hipper realistic

Sounds like I succeeded with the eyes and mouth then. I agree the jaw isn't right though.

Drawing from photos is fine though. I agree that you should do those traditional school exercises of drawing from life and mirrors at first. But once you have a strong enough grasp of what you want to do with art drawing from life shouldn't be a priority. I think the main reason art teachers try to get kids from avoiding photos is they reference bad photos, are not ready to yet, and/or flatten the image in the process. Also some students tend to only draw from the photo. In most situations when some serious art is being made the source isn't referenced anymore (you stop looking at the model, photo, whatever) and it's just you and the art.

I agree, but if you can't draw well from photos it looks rather grotesque.

it dosen't look like expressive draw,
good anatomy = academic drawing ? strange thinking,
rudness ? I think your comment is primitive, deviantart is to help each other and for good and bad (critiques) opinions, right ? not only for unnecessary sweet complements, thats way here are so many narcistic people,

and I don't understand why are you writing to me ? lol

I'm all for critiques that help the artist out. But I agree that just saying something sucks isn't a constructive critique. What part of the anatomy was bothering you?

Also I wasn't going for photographic representation here either, but saying that doesn't give one license to draw poorly which I hopefully wasn't doing.

The key word is "critiques" which goes beyond "I like only the contrast, but anatomy sucks, you should more practice with that" because if you took the time to view this particular artist's gallery you would see anatomy, when he wants to is a strong point. What you did was not critique. What you did was make a broad uneducated statement.

And yes expressive, as in the tendency of an artist to distort reality for an emotional effect. In this instance using those sharp contrasts that you like so much to achieve this effect as well as bold line work. Not academic, which is an exacting scientific approach to art created for the basis of recreating reality. Please excuse me if I use the term academic drawing to describe a piece with good anatomy. I understand that not all drawings made with proper anatomy are "academic" in the strictest term. However, I feel my point was clear.

I am writing to you because your comment was shallow, non-helpful, ignorant and frankly it just pissed me off.

I disagree, I wrote "practice with that"
so author of this pic should know whats wrong.
My opinion was short and literal, perhaps too literal.

I think mean "sukcs" in english isn't one of the most vulgaric ? I've heard worse.
I know whats Expressionism, if you don't -look at Shiele, Marc, Kandinsky and Rivera artworks. In theirs work are many human disproportions, deformartions but it's "properly" and stylish. Here it's rather unskilfully. That girl was drew the same as a background, hair is unnatural like other parts of her body. Only high contrast is attractive. This pic have something from expressionism, maybe becouse it was drew emotionally, but it's not truly expressive.

I think our discussion here is unkind and unnecessary , if you want to write to me, send me a note
If I made a mistakes sorry for them, english isn't my real language.

I believe he was going for a more expressive piece as opposed to an academic drawing.
Also, what compels someone to criticize with this level of rudeness?
