Description
One of the most important figures in the Batman mythos, Catwoman represents the classic yet fun narrative trope of the enemies turned lovers. This version of Selina Kyle was introduced in the now legendary Batman: Year One by Miller and Mazzucchelli. There she´s presented to us as a sex worker and a fighter who, inspired by the Batman, creates a cat themed masked identity and becomes a burglar and a criminal. This origin was then expanded in 1989 in her first solo series with writer Mindy Newell and artist Joe Brozowsky, where we learn not only about the events of Batman: Year One from her perspective, but also how she got up to that point and what happened afterwards.

The first important thing about the design is that, like in Matt Reeve´s 2022 The Batman, I thought it was important to bring back the idea that she was black in Year One, something that has been debated for a while and that if true was definitely not followed by later entries of the character. Like with Commissioner Gordon, I believe the story of a corrupt city and a group of people trying to fix it is way richer when added the different discriminations seen there, in this case to black people, more so if we´re talking about a city in the United States in the 80s. For the costume I was heavily inspired again by Shirow Masamune (told you he would pop up again), in this case his work on the original Ghost in The Shell manga, where we see many great designs for female tactical suits that feel both sci-fi and retro. The detail of the knuckle-claws was inspired of course by the Black Panther from the Ultimate Universe, because I see this Selina as more of a boxer, especially knowing from her series that she learned how to fight from Ted Grant, Wildcat himself.
