I always feel pitty for Mary, I mean she just wanted out, see the world, be free... But noooo... someone just had to get burned

Well, no one necessarily needed to get burned but someone had to be left behind since only the number of people entering can only leave in that amount. If you play the updated version of the game and examine the book shelves in the tree room, there's one book that talks about 'replacing existences'. So it didn't really matter whether they all got along or not, two people entered the fabricated world. Only two can leave.
