Description Hans, are we the bad guys?

Here we go again ... drawing more images for which I have no inspiration at all. Seriously, Star Fox has so little fan-art of anything, aside from Krystal. This was a bit of a pet peeve of mine but when I was drawing, I tried to look for inspiration. Seriously I really did and I found nothing. Absolute radio silence. I know I don't usually use refs but I like to have at least some basic idea of how things look. I did find this cool picture though: StarFox vs StarWolf: Fight for control of Lylat

So with that out of the way, last time, we had a look at some Cornerian Infantry from Star Fox, now we move onto the Venomian Infantry, the bad guys. Since I had little to no inspiration, the only ref for Venom soldies comes from intro cutscene of Star Fox: Event Horizon and a few concept images from other Star Fox games. That's all. In Star Fox: Assault, you do fight some on-foot soldiers but those are pirates and they wear space suits so ... no real sources for real planetside Venom troopers, sadly.

I had to take a very deep dive into the lore of Star Fox because if I am going to create some images, I at least need to know some basic rules and information to base my image on. Granted, the lore of Star Fox is honestly a bit chaotic because there are games and also comic books which expand of it. The biggest problem is that there are remakes of Star Fox games which change the story, introducing new characters and changing motivations. I would dare and say that Star Fox actually does not have a canon event timeline. The events, characters and appearances seem to change rapidly.

Anyway, here are some basic facts I researched about Venomians in order to draw them:

They take their name from the planet Venom which is quite an interesting place to say the least. Venom is a world of death. It's covered in acidic seas, it's atmosphere is highly toxic, it's mostly barren desert wastelands, it's covered in thic smog which blocks out most of the light so it's always dark. The planet is also rather big, meaning it has a strong gravity. Everything you carry around is heavier, moving around is tiresome. This planet blows, oh this planet blows HARD! It's a horrible place to live. Nevertheless, there is life on the planet. There are some areas with vegetation and breathable air. This is where the lizards of Lylat System come from, actually. This is why I've drawn the snake lady on the left.
However, there are more signs of long gone life on Venom. The entire planet is dotted with ancient ruins, suggesting that Venom had once been habitable. Some even believe that Venom had once been the cradle of life for the enitre Lylat System. This where apes come in or to be precise, one particular ape scientist, going by the name Andross.
Now Andross is quite the prominent scientist in the Lylat System and Venom has always been of special interest to him and to apes in general. You see, apes actually believe that Venom might be their lost homeworld and Andross has made it one of his main goals to restore the planet to into a verdant paradise. Unfortunatelly, in order to do that, he started doing some rather unethical bio-technology experiments. When this had been uncovered, the government of Corneria banned his reasearch. Naturally, he continued secretly but a tragedy struck when one of his ongoing experiments resulted in an explosion, destroying a portion of Corneria city. After this offence, he was exiled to Venom. Essentially, a death sentence since the planet is so hostile to life or at least, that is what the Cornerians believed. Too bad for them, Venom basically became free real estate for Andross. He gained a large following among apes, lizards and some other animals from the far reaches of the Lylat Systems, built himself vast underground complexes beneath Venom surface and got ready to strike back at Corneria.

To be honest, I was kinda fascinated with the story of Andross. I tried to condense his story into a short paragraph but I have to say, I always thought he is just one of those base evil villains who are evil because ... well ... they are just evil. But no! Delving into some pages of Star Fox comics, Andross actually had a family, he dreamt big, he yearned to explore the universe, he even fell in love with a vixen!? Unfortunatelly, through tragedy, bad circumstance and admittedly, his own arrogance, he became a villain. Rather than restoring Venom and exploring the universe through science he became single mindedly focused on revenge. He wants nothing but to destroy Corneria now. He also went a bit mad and started experimenting on himself with some rather scary results.

Anyway, I just wanted to give you some basis for the Venomian mindset. Venomians, apes especially, are smart and cunning animals. They love their science and they love making weapons of war with their science. I feel they are more advanced than Corneria because of this. Their suits of armour are more mechanical, almost like exoskeletons or power armours. They also have some basic life-support systems installed. Considering they live on Venom, they generally need this to survive the harsh environment. Despite the fact there are some areas of Venom with non-toxic breathable air, there is still little oxygen in the atmosphere. That's why all of the soldiers I have drawn have small tubes going to their noses. Even if the climate area they are in is relatively harmless, it never hurts to have some reserves of clean oxygen. I could have drawn just a full environmental suits but I wanted to practice more anthro animal faces. I've also drawn a few weapons from Star Fox: Assault. The Homing Launcher and the Machine Gun + my own creations, such as the laser marksman rifle. However, I had to fix a major issue with the game itself. Star Fox: Assault is a shooter game without a shotgun! I repeat, Star Fox: Assault is a shooter game WITHOUT A SHOTGUN! I know! The horror! I had to fix that.

Anyway, I've also drawn a mech in the background because Venomians are big on robotics. They kinda have to because it is fairly reasonable to assume there's not too many of them. Hence why they greatly utilize robots, drones and other automated machines on the frontlines. But even when it comes heavy vehilces, Venomians seem to prefer mechs to tanks. Every high-ranking Venomian officer seems to fancy himself a big starship or a mechanized walker mech (or a an armoured train).
