There was that time, when I have drawn my first anime fan-art. Looking back at it now ... I think it is insufficient but hey, aren't all out older pictures insufficient in comparison to our more recent works? This is a "remake" I suppose of Hikaru Shidou from Magic Knight Rayearth.

I believe I've done a good job with the old picture, especially considering it was my first proper anime fan-art. Still, there are many things I wish I could have done differently. First of all, I've actually wanted to draw the massive Rune God Rayearth, hence why this picture is actually called "Rayearth" and is the centre piece while Hikaru herself is slightly off to the side, casually swinging her sword around as she usually does. In fact, I find it a bit strange that there is not that much fan-art of the Rune Gods themselves. They are a big part of the show, it's even named Magic Knight Rayearth. But when you punch "Rayearth" into a search engine, 90% of pictures you get are of the main heroines. I suppose that is understandable. A side effect of this is that I have had virtually no reference pictures for Rayearth, aside from watching the show itself. In the end, I've done what I do best. Butcher the original design and turn it into something looking marginally different. Less fantasy robotics and more of a giant knight with ornate armour.

Hikaru herself was also in need of a redraw. I've had trouble with body proportions in the original drawing, mainly because anime body types have big heads in comparison to their bodies. I've wanted to somehow mix it with my style. Unfortunately, the result was not ideal. I've done the exact opposite of the anime style, the head was too small. This time, I've made sure to practice more. Hikaru is now sleeker. Smol, yet still imposing and tough-as-nails tomboy as ever with more fiery hair and better anime eyes. The colours are also improved, courtesy of my enhanced toolbox.

The last thing which I've added is an ornate framing to the entire picture. I should thank HhxFur as she was the one who got me this idea when we've chatted about composition and how I could improve it. The frame helped from cutting off important details while also giving me something to draw around the very edges of the picture. Frames are also something I have noticed in other Magic Girl Anime drawings and I'm proud to take on this tradition.

Last of all, you know what this picture means. I've re-drawn Hikaru's picture and those who are familiar Magic Knight Rayearth know there are 2 other Magic Knights and I'm certainly not going to leave them out of this little-big remake project. See you again in a month or so, hopefully.
