My dad had one of those. During his first few days ownership, driving it around he thought there was something wrong with it because folks kept waving at him. He kept stopping, getting out and looking round the vehicle but couldn't see anything obviously wrong with it. Then he realised that was what "Beetle Owners" did...wave to each other. Friendly bunch, eh ?
He got rid of it in the end because my mum crashed it and didn't like it any more. She ran it into the back of a boat parked behind a caravan..all three vehicles belonged to my dad. She wasn't very popular for smashing car, boat AND caravan.
They are airtight (pretty much) you know. I had a boyfriend who had one and it was hit in the passenger side. The impact blew the drivers side out. 
Anyway, thanks for the trip down memory lane. Amazing how an image can evoke memories...all good.
