Description Magdalen's night had been rough. She wasn't planning on the egg - she wasn't planning on keeping it, either. But here she was, curled up around the blue egg in the mommy pouch on her chest, with no plans to go to the Nook to see Alma. Well, alright, maybe for some wyngling-care tips. Maggie had never seen herself the type to take care of an egg, so she'd never bothered to pay attention to it when she was a rebellious young adult, living in the Nook until she'd scrounged up enough to move out.

A few poor life decisions later... and here she was.

She stroked the surface of the egg in the darkness of the room, her body still aching and shaking slightly. She wouldn't think of this wyngling as a poor life decision. She refused to let herself do it. It would be her child, and that was that.

__________

Narga bubbled and gurgled at the table, only a few days old but very, very hungry. After all, hatching was hard work! He watched his mother with eager eyes as she sat down beside him, putting the bowl of food out of his reach. He cooed as she gave him a gentle smile and a pat on the head, unable to recognize the exhaustion on her face. When she spooned out a good amount of the (Alma-certified, wyngling-approved) mush for him to eat and offered it, he opened his mouth and closed it on the utensil with great vigor.

His mother chuckled softly, feeding him until she scraped the bottom of the bowl. "All gone," she told him with a scratch under his chin, looking wistful as he leaned into her touch. Her wyngling, from what she'd seen in the past few days, didn't seem to be the type to cry or whimper for much. (She liked to think he'd gotten that from her - Chii knew his father wasn't around to install any traits in him.) But she knew he wasn't getting enough food, because she wasn't, either. She could barely afford to pay rent and keep the two of them fed enough to survive.

They couldn't live like this forever, and she knew it. But despite trying her hardest to get a job, she didn't know any magic, and her skills were barely above average in any other useful area. She kept trying each day, taking him with her so he wouldn't be left alone at home (unable to afford a babysitter and having an aversion to the idea of leaving him at the Nook for any period of time that she didn't absolutely have to). Even though he was a well-tempered wyngling, having him along didn't seem to help any potential employers think better of her, though.

__________

The two of them were playing happily in the living room when there was a sound from the door, a heavy knock, like it came from something with big paws. Narga looked over curiously at the door, tilting his head, and his mother hastily got up to answer, telling him quickly and quietly, "Keep playing, Narga, Momma will be right back."

He didn't pay much attention to what was going on at the door anyway, too occupied with the plush runeboo his mother had recently acquired for him to play with. It had been a little smelly and threadbare at first, but his momma was good at fixing things and making everything better. Needless to say, he loved his one and only toy and kept it within his sight at all times.

Hearing his mother re-enter the room a bit later, he fell back on his rump to look up at her, warbling softly in the way that babies do. There was a concern to his tone as he recognized something - what had his momma looking like she'd just been sick? Her eyes were all puffy and red, and she was sniffling quietly. She passed where he was sitting on the floor, then came back a little later to pick him up, gently sitting him down in his special chair. He trilled quietly, a question he didn't have the words for, but she ignored him in favor of petting his head and feeding him the mashed vegetables she'd made.

Later that night, as he was drifting off to sleep beside her, he heard her begin to cry.

__________

She presented him with a collar the day before, a nice one made of real leather with his name on the shiny tag. He seemed to love it, which only made her sadder. He didn't know it was so they would know his name when he arrived at the Nook that night.

She sighed heavily, brushing back his hair tuft as he fell asleep in her arms. It was time, then. She gently set him in his little bed - new, like the collar, and hopefully comfortable enough at least for the night - and swaddled him in a blanket alongside Kwoo, his plush runeboo.

Then she was off to drop him on the Nook's doorstep, singing a soft lullaby the whole way.
