Dedication

"Mickey Mouse is, to me, a symbol of independence. He still speaks for me and I still speak for him. I only hope that we don't lose sight of one thing - that it was all started by a mouse."

~Walt Disney

I felt it fitting to lead of with the words of Walt Disney himself. He started with nothing and built his dream into one of the greatest institutions of happiness and joy that has ever been. Through a little animated mouse named Mickey, Walt Disney and those who follow in his footsteps have touched the lives of millions of people around the world and given them cause to dream.

My hope for this drawing is that we don't lose sight of the past. Pixar and 3D animation is something I'm sure Walt would have gladly embraced, but he would never forget the 2D animation is where the heart of Disney has and always will lie.

Bring Back the Magic. Bring Back 2D Animation!

Details
Okay, so I'm finished with my little speech, ahem. This is my entry for the Featured Deviation Project. I wanted to create something that was important to a lot of Disney fans, as well as something that looked great! I love 2D animation, and while Pixar is great for Disney... it's just not the same thing. I hope Disney realizes that and brings back what has REALLY inspired millions of artists like myself, 2D animation.

I had a lot of fun with this drawing, especially working with Mickey. He's a lot of fun, and I think I've really improved at drawing him since last time. I decided not to ink or shade it at all, because I wanted to maintain the traditional aspect of the message.

Pose was fun to do. I really like the dynamic hand... but I also thought up one of him putting his hat back on. Hmmm, which to use? I decided on both! So, with his left hand he puts on Yensid's magic hat (Disney backwards!) and with the other he shows us the power of magic.

I added some texture to age the piece, except for the magic which breaks through. In the back I wrote out ALL the Disney films that have been animated traditionally. Loooooong time to do that, but worth it. (Note, some later got covered up, lol)

Wow, I rambled on waaaaay too much. I just hope you like it!

Thank you!

As in copy a pose/pic, nope! I did use a couple Mickey pics I've got lying around (actually, on my sorceror's apprentice checks, 4 different pics!) and a mickey mouse character studio book I have as a reference.

I agree. Like you said, Pixar's great. I love Pixar movies. But it's different. You can still do a lot with 2-D animation, and it kinda bugs me that they've stopped doing that.

*faves*

Beautiful job on Mickey!
Good luck on bringing back 2d animation though.
I've archived hundreds of gigs of it cause I like it too,
but the world changes.
Don't let it bug you too much though. Most of what we doo in 2d can be applied to 3d, including an artists heart and imagination.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lordzasz In reply to Jughead13155 [2008-03-26 19:35:24 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

And yeah, that's true, but would you consider Chicken Little on the same level as Robin Hood? The Wild with The Lion King? Meet the Robinsons with Lilo and Stitch? They're just lacking these days...

I have hope for the Frog Princess, maybe it can revive 2D.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jughead13155 In reply to lordzasz [2008-03-26 21:55:16 +0000 UTC]

I was never a big fan of Robin Hood. The characterization and body language of Lilo and Stitch is still beyond 3d capabilities. Same as most of the Chuck Jones cartoons ("Whats Opera Doc" being my favorite).
The gags just don't work in 3d. I agree that there a some classic 2d movies that are simply beyond any 3d, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, 101 Dalmations, Snow White, Pinnochio, to name a few. These movies are high art, but I still think it was the artists not the medium.
Time has been short the last week or two but your contest looks like fun. I'll try.

It was refreshing to see the 2D in "Enchanted". Can't wait for Wall-E.
I hear that since Disney has acquired Pixar as a full-time member of its ohana, "Walt Disney Animation Studios" is going back to 2D. : w00t: Huzzah!

Stitchfan In reply to Stitchfan [2008-03-26 23:16:13 +0000 UTC]

I agree. Disney's 3D films were fairly inferior when compared to Pixar and even some of its other competetors. I want to see more films like Tarzan, Treasure Planet, and Lilo and Stitch.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

lordzasz In reply to Stitchfan [2008-03-26 19:36:54 +0000 UTC]

I hope so! Really, that's what they should do. Let Pixar make it's films in 3D (they're so much better than the one's Disney has tried in 3D) and just bring some of the originality and heart back to the animation departments at Disney Studios.
