A lot of irony in this picture, the symbol of Soviet operation crumbling away.

Your Pripyat shots are amazing. I love how you got the lighting and angles. I wonder, how much time were you alloted to take these pictures? I've wanted to go to Pripyat myself and shoot some photographs.

I'm doing a simple fancomic based on Pripyat, could I possibly reff a couple of your photos? I will credit and provide links, if I receive your permission.

Sorry for the delay - thank you! I was in Pripyat for two days. Depending on the location, I was there from 30 minutes to 3 hours, but conditions were quite flexible.

Of course, please go ahead and use them for your fancomic. I'm looking forward to what you produce.

Thank you, and no worries about the late reply.

I've already gotten chapter one up, but I did not use any photos yet; I wanted to wait for permission. Thanks again, for the reply and permission, and again, wooonderful photographs!

its striking when you see the insignia, since i didnt read the title until after i had seen the pic. really nice, the shades of the windows and the clouds combined with the decay really creates a nice eerie feel.

That sign looks like an abandoned dream on top of that building. There is some real feeling there, specifically because of the politically charged feelings the hammer and sickle elicit. Although I completely understand this was not meant as a political statement; you still can't help feel a loss here. The building adds to this feeling.

Thanks - the political statements are in the eye of the beholder, but the symbolic aspects of that shot were too good to pass up. I thought it looked sad too.

Wow, great capture. I hope one day I can do some photos in such a location, too. Guess it is depressing, but the photos have so much potential to become fantastic ones!

Thank you! Pripyat is not a depressing location as such, but it gets under your skin, especially with the radiation. And going to such a location is just a matter of planning.

Oh yah, radiation is going under your skin. Harhar
Anyway. Still such a problem? Sure, you can't see the reactor without an authorization and safety precautions, but I thought that you can see the rest of the city. You can't? What to do, that you are allowed to visit it and take photos etc.?
And what about the radiation?

You need a permit and a guide. The easiest way is to book a tour with one of the Kyiv travel agents, but this will be a rather touristy experience. You can try to organize something through the official agency, but it's not that easy.
The radiation varies depending on where you are in the zone. There are dangerous pockets, and inside you should wear a dust mask. Some more info on radiation here: [link]

Mhm, more rules than I thought ^^
Well, I think I will do this when I finished with school, maybe. Would be a nice thing.
Only thing is that the guide is more expensive than the tour I think. But finally you are more independent...
Thank you for the link and the informations, I will think about all this.
You had to plan it all by yourself by the way? Do you pay the car together with the guide?
What to do with your clothes after that trip?
Sorry, that I ask so many questions, but I'm damn interested in it

- Yes, I planned it myself, with help from my Russian-speaking friends.
- A driver was included in our price.
- We threw away our shoes and washed everything else very thoroughly.

Ok, I assume such friends are a big help for planning it

What about the camera? hard to clean that, no? Guess she still glows like a Christmas tree. But finally the radiation level in the air is not that high as it is near the earth, right? So that's the reason you had to throw your shoes away...
And thanks again for answering all these questions.
I'm thinking about to go there after I have finished my school.

Can I ask you again, when I'm certain to do that?

nice shot! I like it, but what's the horror of it?

It wasn't meant as a political statement, that is. I just thought the clouds looked evil. But point taken.

Are there lot of people who want to do a trip to Chernobyl?

Thanks for the compliments! I enjoyed the Ukraine - like nothing I've ever seen!

I wouldn't say there are a *lot* of people who want to go to Chernobyl, but in the Urban Exploration scene, it's becoming a popular destination.
