Description Once again, just passing by with a quickie

Most of you following me know that I'm a big Star Wars fan. But the funny thing is, I had never ever drawn a Darth Vader, until tonight. I know it may sound weird, but that's just how it is. Vader is such an icon that I always was afraid to mess up, and there is nothing worse than a messed up Vader... Well there is, but you know what I mean xD

Anyways, today I made two sketches, one of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and one of Vader. I couldn't decide which one I wanted to color after that, but a few people around me insisted that I do the Vader one. So I did
Here I used the same technique as for the speedpainting of R2-D2 I made yesterday, and I think it worked even better here than it did on R2. Maybe because it is much darker..

Anyways, I hope you guys will like my first Vader ever

Adobe Photoshop CS2, Bamboo Fun tablet, a bit over an hour and a half, a good 45 minutes of that for the sketch alone..
Various references from the internet.

As always, comments/favs/watches are highly appreciated

Don't let fear get you Lord-FSan! We all know that fear leads to the dark side!

Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate... leads to suffering...

Nonetheless, for doing Darth Vader for the first time as a speedpainting you have made a masterpiece of fandom! The only character more nostalgic would be Lord Sidious, but I easily digress!

That's really awesome for the time frame of sketching and then coloring. Nice pose too! And as I mentioned earlier, lol "for shame fellow star wars nerd"

One point of advice, and I noticed it on the R2 speedy as well, don't be afraid of abusing white... like with a hard brush. You can set the layer to overlay... or better yet, with the color you are highlighting with, like red, make a new layer and set it to color dodge (or burn) the effect will be really dramatic and won't take any extra time really. Especially on a black subject you just set the highlight layer underneath the black to preserve the black shading and all that jazz.

Indeed that's a good point to remember for next time.
On this one, as well as on the R2, I made the highlights with my brush set as overlay rather than normal, just to test it out and see how it goes.
I should try to set the brush as dodge/burn next time

Thanks for the tips ;D

Dodge and Burn is all I have been using lately... however, it's sometimes not the best, even at low or high opacitys. Sometimes you have to shade in -normal- with certain colors... I don't know if that makes sense. But even if you shade with the normal setting, and then switching the layer to another layer effect, it does wonders as well. it's really all just a matter of testing it and then messing with the layer opacity to get it just right.

Lol yeah, I play with layer settings all the time, but lately I'm a mood to try the brush settings to see which is better in the end for me.
As you know, I'm not a fan of the dodge and burn tool, but I do recognize its advantages at times lol
