It's true, the episode never definitively says one way or another on the case of Sparity, and I think it's for a number of reasons, like not wanting to crush the Sparity fans, and wanting to stress that, no matter what, Rarity and Spike are definitely still friends, if nothing else. And yes, I agree, no matter what the relationship between those two definitely got healthier, especially seeing Rarity's finally realized she likes having Spike around for more than just because he and his various skills as a dragon are useful for her.

But knowing that the show's writers were always hesitant to commit to Sparity due to the many logistical issues (mainly age difference) that the show wasn't in a place to properly address, and long suspecting they've been looking for ways to either wind it down or slip away from it entirely, I think the episode is the writers' way of putting Sparity to bed. It sort of make sense to do it now, too, seeing it's the last season anyway.

But I know shippers. Even if the show had just come out and said, in no uncertain terms, Sparity is dead, that wouldn't stop them from still pursuing it.

We don't know their exact ages, but we can easily extrapolate their approximate ages by comparing them to others around them of clearly differing ages. Thus, we can be certain Rarity is old enough to be considered an adult to the ponies, while Spike, to the dragons, is younger than a teenager, probably around the equivalent of a pre-teen for dragons, maybe just a tad older than that now that he's hit the Molt, the dragon version of puberty, it seems. Just a bit of an age gap there, see.

One of the disadvantages of introducing other dragons to the show like Ember and most especially Smolder is that it also made it clearer to all just how young Spike actually is, regardless of whether you look at his age in pony years or dragon years--in terms of physical maturity, it almost wouldn't matter.

So personally, I think the show was probably wise to handle it the way they did--just enough to settle the matter decently for fans without going too far into the awkward and nitty-gritty that inevitably has to come with the subject.
