Description Wise, calm and patient, Tolus the Waterlord commands the Water aspect of the Weave. From the shining marble towers and walkways of the Great Port of Korrothis, and the Sunken Palace, he keeps his element in balance with the others, trains new toa of water, acid and poison and commands his own team of Arcons; specialist toa whose mission is to promote stability across the known universe.

Tolus is an Ehlyus, and served in Ehlek's legions in times long past. He carries the traditional staff of office with the Weave's symbol upon it, and a set of living, ceremonial armour over his old and faded protodermis cladding. His mask allows him to breathe on land, and keeps at bay otherwise fatal injuries to his neck and chest inflicted by one of the Dark Hunters long ago.

He does!

He's meant to be the same species as Ehlek was, and Ehlek used those foot parts too.

Great work, but what does the Ga-Nui in Matoran mean?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Lol-Pretzel In reply to FrancisJeremyXavyer [2013-07-15 12:34:09 +0000 UTC]

Translated literally, it says "Water Great". Tolus is the equivalent of an archbishop for water-elemental characters.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Lol-Pretzel In reply to FrancisJeremyXavyer [2013-07-17 00:47:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, yeah. It's not a great stretch of the imagination to stick "Ga" and "Nui" together, but I quite often try and name characters/creatures using actual Matoran words. The Krahtorak (Shadow Dragon) and Levohkah (Air Spirit) for example.

Plague-Doc-Matteo [2013-07-13 15:31:37 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh I vaguely remember seeing this guy. Marvelous job once again, and as always Gringat, My favorite part of this guy is definitely the color scheme. However, I feel that such a prestigious character could use a little bit better executing. I feel a MOC as awesome as this deserves at least one bricklink order to get a few specialized parts. Lego makes green cloth elements , I think those would suit him far better for the draping effect you have going on on his lower torso. Beyond that he has a wonderful build. The simplistic limb structure actually works to make him look a bit frail, and that the armor that goes over top makes him appear stronger and more regal.

Overall a wonderful MOC and my only nitpick is the Vahki heads. I personally think you can do better.

^^

Unfortunately, Tolus here was a struggle to build because I was at University while he was under construction. I started him at the end of the Bio-Cup 2012, realised I couldn't finish him in time, picked him up occasionally over the next semester, and finally finished him in January. And despite taking 5 months to make, I didn't have enough time to make him that complex.

I have never made a Bricklink order. D: And also, I don't think that green cloth would work. I wanted a translucent green, like kelp. His armour is living after all.
I may or may not make custom robes for some of my characters in future, though. I'm pretty good with a sewing machine, surprisingly.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Lol-Pretzel [2013-07-13 17:32:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh I see. Wow, that would drive me nuts. I've got one MOC that's been on Hiatus because I need more parts to make the wings, and I'm working on a new MOC that's temporarly on hold because I have an order coming, and just that is really irksome.

That surprises me. I thought you of all people mighta been a regular BL user. You should give it a try some time. Its quite an efficient way to spend your money getting parts you need. See for yourself Some of the quantities was what that store had left. They were having a sale.
The kelp thing makes sense yes. Kelp is also flat and bendy, so that's kinda a way you could explain using the green sail parts. They have the holes in them so maybe you could string through some translucent pieces over top of it for that effect.
I wish we had a Sewing Machine, I'd like to learn to sew just enough to get by and maybe mend together some basic stuff. lego still doesn't have any hooded cloaks for large figures, and I'm thinking I might have to do something of that ilk with that Chi Razar head. I know the Plague doctor thing has been done a lot by me but since its its own story arch I feel more characters would help make it more interesting.

Nice. And if you need any assistance with BL I can help you out. I've used it enough to be familiar, but learned it recently enough to know why its utterly confusing and know a good way to begin. Its a confusing site at first. Kinda like math, confusing, but once you know it it makes sense and is easy.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Lol-Pretzel In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2013-07-13 22:03:07 +0000 UTC]

I'm actually really familiar with the site. It's a great way to find out where a certain part comes from when the inevitable question arises about any NPUs in my MOCs. The reason I haven't bought anything from there is because I don't have a PayPal account set up yet.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Lol-Pretzel [2013-07-13 22:16:36 +0000 UTC]

Aaahhh I see. Well okay. I just wanted to offer my help. Most people who haven't used it aren't familiar with it. You are literally the first person I've talked to who's familiar but hasn't ordered parts off of it.

I currently don't have a linked paypal, so I use a friends. It doesn't necessarily matter which Paypal account you use, you just have to instruct the seller to ship to the Address on file for bricklink instead of Paypal. That's what I do. It is so much simpler when you can pay for it directly though.

Proof that simplicity isn't always bad.
Nice moc, no complaints.

I don't know much about toa's and the like, but I can say that this MOC is giving a swampy plant vibe, and doesn't immediately strike me as being a "water" elemental. I think that it has something to do with those shoulder pads.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Lol-Pretzel In reply to Vedkarrtheunbroken [2013-07-13 14:55:47 +0000 UTC]

Water in the Matoran Universe is mostly fresh lakes, rivers and streams, since the ocean is all silvery metallic and that. Tolus' palace is at the bottom of a lake. Imagine him swimming between the plants with those fins of his

The outer armour is removable, as well.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Vedkarrtheunbroken In reply to Lol-Pretzel [2013-07-13 22:38:38 +0000 UTC]

I'd think that all these parts would be removable, bein' LEGOs and so forth. <:'s

Great MOC as always, and I commend you for having found a good looking and sensible use for those crazy vahki heads. Normally I would complain about colors, but this palette works and blends quite well.

I do sometimes make instructions, and Tolus' torso design is one I posted up on MOCpages a while back. You'll need a program called Lego Digital Designer (LDD) to view it though.

malakai08 In reply to Lol-Pretzel [2013-07-13 12:58:52 +0000 UTC]

lovely cus i do have that program and have been trying to learn some new stuff by trying to replicate parts of your builds. so far i've been able to make your small hands

Lol-Pretzel In reply to malakai08 [2013-07-13 14:59:27 +0000 UTC]

Alright then, when I posted a character of mine called Tenum to MOCpages, I included an LDD file containing his custom head, hand and torso design. The download link is under "Building Instructions" at the bottom of this page: [link] Tolus' is pretty much the same.
